Sleighter reaches 1,000 career points in Uniontown’s victory
Kelsey Sleighter earned her place in the Uniontown girls basketball history by scoring her 1,000th point Thursday night in the Lady Raiders, 66-23, victory over Yough.
Sleighter drained a trey with 4:54 left in the second quarter to become just the third Lady Red Raider to reach the milestone. The game was stopped, and Sleighter was honored for her achievement with the game ball.
Sleighter finished with 28 points for the Lady Red Raiders (7-3, 2-2), while Lydya Dennis added 12.
Norwin 70, Albert Gallatin 19 – The Lady Knights jumped out to a 23-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in this Section 1-AAAA game.
In all, three players recorded double figures for the Lady Knights (5-5, 3-0), led by Rachel Delsenine’s 17. Jena Demek (15) and Taylor McCallister (11) also scored in double figures.
Ally Rudolph scored six points for the Lady Colonials (0-10, 0-4).
Burgettstown 53, Waynesburg Central 33 – The Lady Blue Devils outscored the Lady Raiders in every quarter. Danielle Jacobs had 14 points for the Lady Raiders, while Michelle Cesa had 9.
Serra Catholic 67, Frazier 26 – Chelsea Howser scored 12 points for the Lady Commodores.
Lauren Somers led the with 8 rebounds. Frazier slips to 0-4 in the section and 0-9 overall.
Fort Cherry 48, Jefferson-Morgan 16 – Jessie Merckle scored 18 points and Rachel Bellhy added 14 more as Fort Cherry earned a Section 3-A win on the road.
The Lady Rangers (8-2, 3-0) led by six after the first quarter, and held Jefferson-Morgan to five points or less in each of the remaining quarters.
Ashley Faddis scored seven points to lead the Lady Rockets (4-6, 2-2). Jefferson-Morgan travels to Carmichaels Monday for another section bout.
Girls swimming
Belle Vernon 78, Steel Valley 41 – The Lady Leopards had a strong night in the pool, defeating the Lady Ironmen for a Section 5-AA victory.
Natalie Martin (200 freestyle, 100 backstroke) and Gibby Kohr (100 butterfly, 500 freestyle) won two individual events. Mary Wardle (200 IM), Rebecca Wardle (50 freestyle), Mollee Tunney (100 freestyle), and Johni Beeler (100 backstroke) all won an individual event.
Rebecca Wardle, Tunney, Kohr and Mary Wardle were victorious in the 200 medley relay. The quartet of Mary Wardle, Martin, Rebecca Wardle and Tunney won the 200 freestyle relay. Mary Wardle, Hannah Naylor, Martin and Kohr combined to win the 400 freestyle relay.
Uniontown 56, Charleroi 9 – The Lady Raiders opened Section 5-AA action with nearly perfect results as they won every event of the night.
Lauren VanNosdeln won the 200 IM and 500 freestyle, while teammate Shawna Guthrie won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
Kayla Goodwin took the 50 freestyle, while Jordon Conner won the 100 breaststroke.
The Lady Raiders (2-2, 1-0) also benefited from victories by Kristin Nedley (200 freestyle), Jessie Geary (diving) and Christina Homer (100 butterfly).
A team of Miller, Conner, Goodwin and Homer won the 200 medley relay, while the team of Homer, Sarah Novak, Guthrie and VanNosdeln captured the 200 freestyle relay.
The Lady Raiders finished their night with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay with a team of Goodwin, Conner, Miller and Nedley.
Indiana 99, Laurel Highlands 61, Ringgold 18 – The Fillies earned victories courtesy of Casey Dascenzo (200 freestyle), Haley Dascenzo (100 butterfly and 100 backstroke), and Abbey Siebart (500 freestyle).
Boys swimming
Belle Vernon 75, Steel Valley 49 – The Leopards made it a sweep of the Section 4-AA meet, easily defeating the Ironman for the win.
Alex Yawny (200 freestyle, 100 backstroke) and Scott Verner (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle) both had two individual first places. Brandon Luda (100 butterfly) and Matt Bronakowski (500 freestyle) each won a race.
Verner, Yawny, Bronakowski and Luda won the 200 medley relay. The Leopards’ Luda, Yawny, Verner and Tom Crawford won the 200 freestyle relay in WPIAL-qualifying time. Brandon Murtaugh, Jake Riley, Dave Merz and Bronakowski finished first in the 400 freestyle relay.
Uniontown 73, Charleroi 35 – The Red Raiders won their first five events on their way to starting Section 5-AA play with a convincing victory.
A team of Greg Lerch, Bryce Markwardt, James Rabon and Torin Kelley started the night off for the Red Raiders (2-2, 1-0) with a victory in the 200 medley relay.
Tyler Franks (200 freestyle), Kelley (200 IM) and Chris Smith (50 freestyle) followed up with wins for the Red Raiders.
Jon Jones posted a score of 258.10 in diving for the Red Raiders, who led 64-3 after five events.
Lerch (500 freestyle) and Markwardt (100 breastroke) would help distance the Red Raiders later in the meet.
The Red Raiders also earned victories in the 200 freestyle relay with a team of Tyler Michelangelo, Brandon Quinn, Smith and Markwardt and the 400 freestyle with a team of Smith, Rabon, Kelley and Lerch.
Indiana 103, Laurel Highlands 58, Ringgold 21 – Justin Kostelnik took the 100 butterfly for the Mustangs.
The Little Indians prevailed with victories in 11 events.
Women’s basketball
Waynesburg 77, Thiel 69 – The Yellow Jackets rallied from an 11-point deficit. Tied at 65-65 with 3:20 left in the game, the Yellow Jackets went on a 12-4 run to take the win.
Men’s basketball
Thiel 72, Waynesburg 66 – The Yellow Jackets held a 45-43 lead early in the second half, but the Tomcats rallied with 13 unanswered points to take the win.
Wagner 83, Robert Morris 78 – NEW YORK (AP) – Tyler Murray scored 26 points, and Wagner defeated Robert Morris in overtime.
Murray was 8 of 10 from the free-throw line as the Seahawks (7-7, 3-0 Northeast Conference) shot 82.1 percent from the charity stripe (23 of 28), including 8 of 8 in overtime.
Karon Abraham brought Robert Morris to within one, 79-78, with 7 seconds left in the extra period. Josh Thompson then made two free throws for an 81-78 Wagner lead with 6 seconds left.
On the Colonials’ next possession Gary Wallace turned it over and Murray made two free throws to seal it.
Latif Rivers scored 22 points, and Orlando Parker had 13 points and 12 rebounds for Wagner, which had 19 assists to just nine turnovers.
Abraham led Robert Morris (5-9, 1-2) with 32 points. Lijah Thompson added 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Colonials, and Russell Johnson chipped in 10 points.
