Men’s basketball
The Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus women’s basketball team trailed by a point at halftime Saturday afternoon, but finished strong by outscoring visiting Penn College in the final 20 minutes, 44-36, for a 74-67 PSUAC victory.
The Lady Roaring Lions (3-8, 3-0) had a well-balanced scoring attack with five players in double figures. Kasey Ruble led the way with 17 points. Kaitlyn Novak scored 14. Jill Guthrie finished with 12 points, Nicole Garrety added 11, and Kayla Hatfield had 10.
Kierstin Steer led Penn College (4-5, 2-1) with a game-high 24 points. Hilary Rice was also in double figures with 15.
Thomas More (Ky.) 59, Waynesburg 44 – The Yellow Jackets mustered only 19 points in the first half, and the visiting Saints just matched their hosts in the second half for a Presidents’ Athletic Conference road victory.
The Saints, ranked No. 3 in Division III, improve to 5-0 in the conference and 13-0 overall. Waynesburg is now 4-2 in the PAC and 10-3 overall.
Chelsea Tolliver scored 15 points for the Saints, with Allison Long finishing with 14 and Nicole Dickman adding 12.
Brittany Spencer was the lone Waynesburg player in double figures with 13 points.
California (Pa.) 65, Kutztown 51 – Amy Johns scored a career-high 31 points to lead the Vulcans to a PSAC crossover victory. Johns made 12-of-24 field goals and 7-of-9 free throws, and tied for team honors by grabbing 12 rebounds.
Kayla Smith had another double-double for the Vulcans (8-3) with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Melissa McQuade led Kutztown (7-4) with 18 points.
Kutztown 72, California (Pa.) 66 – The Vulcans’ rally for 16 points down at halftime came a couple baskets short in PSAC crossover action Saturday at California’s Hamer Hall. Kutztown led 40-24 after the first 20 minutes.
California held the advantage in field goals, 27-20, and 3-point goals, 5-4, but the visitors had far more trips to the free throw line with an edge of 28-7.
Tamir Johnson had a double-double for Kutztown (7-4) with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Julius Gray scored a game-high 25 points, while teammate Jermaine Jackson was also in double figures with 10 points.
Steve Swiech led California (6-4) with 16 points and eight rebounds. Quentin Harding scored 15 and Rashawd Hatten added 13.
Thomas More (Ky.) 86, Waynesburg 78 – Both teams made 27 field goals, but the Saints held a 25-16 advantage on the free throw line to defeat the Yellow Jackets in Presidents’ Athletic Conference road victory.
Aaron Miller led Thomas More (8-6, 4-0) with a double-double, a game-high 26 points and 12 rebounds. Brian Muse finished with 19 points and Spencer Berlekamp added 10 points and a game-high six assists.
Erik Noone led the Yellow Jackets (5-9, 2-3) with 19 points, including five 3-pointers. Nick Herman scored 14 points, Jeff Young finished with 12, and Lou Galante added 11.
Penn College 77, Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus 64 – Penn College held a 17-point halftime lead, and then held the Roaring Lions at bay in the final 20 minutes for a PSUAC road victory.
Leroy Joiner made 12-of-17 field goal attempts to finish with a game-high 25 points for Penn College (4-6, 3-0). Joiner finished with a double-double, grabbing 10 rebounds. Greg Solyak (17 points, 11 rebounds) and Nico Italiani (13 points, 10 rebounds) also had double-doubles for the visitors.
Uniontown grad James Pratt was a tough man to stop before he fouled out, leading the Roaring Lions (1-10, 1-3) with 22 points, including 11-of-14 free throws, nine rebounds, and four assists. Ian McCombs scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and Joshua Tomson added 11 points.
College wrestling
Thiel 41, Case Western Reserve 9 – West Greene graduate Patrick Morris won by fall at 174 pounds, and Albert Gallatin grad Matt Lowry secured a 4-0 decision at 165 pounds Saturday to lead the Tomcats to a non-conference victory.
Boys basketball
Laurel Highlands 48, Mount Pleasant 26 – The Mustangs took a break from section action Saturday afternoon and came away with a victory over the visiting Vikings.
Matt Shull led Laurel Highlands (4-5) with 12 points. DiVonte Walton added 10.
Ryan Gumbita scored eight points for Mount Pleasant.
Geibel Catholic 53, Leechburg 51 – The Gators trailed 15-6 after the first quarter Friday night, but rallied past the Blue Devils for a Section 4-A road victory.
Geibel Catholic (1-0, 5-3) pushed ahead in the third quarter and led 41-38 going into the final quarter. Leechburg made a run in the final eight minutes, outscoring the Gators, 13-12.
Michael Noonan scored a game-high 25 points for the Gators with teammate Christian Henckel adding 17.
Dylan Romaniv (12), Eric Snyder (11) and Jacob Oberdorf (11) were in double figures for Leechburg.
