Street Stock Twin Features Highlight Racing at Roaring Knob

MARKLEYSBURG — Five new winners highlighted racing Saturday night at Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex.

Jared Hawkins picked up his first of the season in the American Racer Tire Super Late Models and defending champion John Over scored his first Krause Electric FASTRAK Late Model win of 2011. Jim Bendishaw Jr. and Joe Wrona split the Twin 12’s for the TC Race Parts Street Stocks while Cindy Rhodes took her career first checker in the FWD 4 Cylinder Roadrunners. Repeat winners were Louie Krushansky (Modifieds) and Marty Spade Jr. (Ft. Necessity Garage Chargers).

The twin 12’s for the TC Race Parts Street Stocks were the main attraction for the evening. In the first race, Jim Bendishaw, Jr. took the lead at the drop of the green and never looked back to take his first feature of the year. Bendishaw left the field in his dust beating Todd Dennis, Bob Nelson, Bob Neratka, Joe Wrona, Jim Byers, Ben Policz, Charlie McClain, Grady Palmer and Marshall Coleman. Wrona and Bendishaw claimed heat victories.

Bruce Dreistadt led one lap of the 15-lap Modified feature before heat winner “Lucky” Louie Krushanky blew by and breezed home to his second feature win of the year. Driestadt, Josh Cramer and Larry Atha filed out the slim field.

Fairmont, WV’s Jared Hawkins started on the outside of the front row and made quick work of the field in the 25-lap American Racer Tire Super Late Model feature. Hawkins was able to pull away as Mason Zeigler and Scott Rhodes battled lap after lap for the second spot. Zeigler, a recent high school graduate, never faltered in holding last week’s winner, Scott Rhodes, off for a strong second place run. Rhodes, Bob Gordon and Matt Cosner were the top five. Sixth through tenth went to Danny Mitchell, Cody Hardesty, Billy Holbert, Mel Minnick and Greg Tressler. The heat wins went to Rhodes and Billy Brown,

Defending Krause Electric FASTRAK Late Model champion John Over led all 20 laps for his first 2011 victory. The win was a tough one with Troy Shields, then Derek Doll, pressuring him most of the way. Shields made several attempts to pass the Uniontown driver and at one point looked like he had the momentum when the caution flew. Over drove a perfect race to earn his first win over Shields, Nolan Dalton, Derek Doll, Shawn Jett, Dusty Hamrick, Bobby Cossell, Ryan Montgomery, Mike Lewis and Maurice Thompson, Jr. The three heats were won by Doll, Jett and Over.

JT Baird drove 11 flawless laps in the Ft. Necessity Garage Charger feature. Problem was the final lap, as Marty Spade Jr. was able to get a run out of turn three. The pair touched and Spade sped to his third win this season. Baird came home second over Kenny Burkholder, Kyle Burkholder, Donnie Walters, Justin Howell, Ed Vogel, Ross Higbee, Bob Matthews and CJ Nicola. A scary moment on lap four saw Bus Matthews roll twice in turn four. Matthews exited the heavily damaged car under his own power. Heat wins were shared by Bus Matthews and Kenny Burkholder.

Next up it was the second of Twin 12’s for the TC Race Parts Street Stocks. This time Smithfield’s Joe Wrona was not to be denied as he fended off Todd Dennis for his first win since 2009 at the speedplant. Wrona drove a smooth race and bested Dennis, Jim Bendishaw Jr., Bob Nelson, Jim Byers, Bob Neratka, Marshall Coleman, Ben Policz, Bob Miller and Jason Gibbs.

Steve Settle looked like he had this third 10-lap FWD 4 Cylinder Roadrunner feature in the bag. Settle had a big lead when the Dale Earnhardt look-a-like machine suddenly slowed. Second place Cindy Rhodes blew by to take the lead with just three laps to go. After the caution to get Settle restarted Rhodes, of Somerset, raced home to her career first feature win. Newcomer Jason Frazier was second ahead of Todd Detrick, Settle, Jason Myers, Dustin Wamsley, Nathan Kaminsky, and heat winner Andrew Pluta, Jr.

Saturday, Roaring Knob will have the Miss Pennelope Powder Puff races for Street Stocks and Chargers. A six division show featuring the American Racer Tire Super Late Models, Krause Electric FASTRAK Late Models, Modifieds, TC Race Parts Street Stocks, Ft. Necessity Garage Chargers and FWD 4 Cylinder Roadrunners will take place. Pit Gates Open at 4:30 with General Admission opening at 5PM. Hot laps begin at 6:45 with Racing starting at 7:15.
