Connecticut remains No. 1 in Associated Press Top 25
Connecticut remained No. 1 in women’s college basketball, with the first five teams in the Top 25 unchanged in the poll by The Associated Press.
UConn received 36 of the 39 first-places votes Monday and No. 2 Stanford drew the other three. The Huskies host Syracuse on Monday night before playing in the Big East tournament that starts this weekend.
Baylor, Tennessee and Texas A&M round out the first five.
Houston entered the poll at No. 25, its first ranking since 2004. The Conference USA team has won 15 straight games and won’t play until Saturday when it hosts Tulane in its regular-season finale.
“I’ve wanted to get this team back into the Top 25,” Houston coach Todd Buchanan said. “We got it done probably in all honesty a year or two ahead of what would be more realistic.”
Buchanan was an assistant coach for the Cougars from 2001-05 when they were last ranked. After spending the past few years as the coach of Houston Baptist, he returned to the school this season when coach Joe Curl left.
Iowa rejoined the Top 25 while West Virginia and Georgia fell out.
Jones questionable
WACO, Texas – Baylor senior guard Melissa Jones is undergoing further evaluation by doctors after hitting her head diving for a loose ball for the third-ranked Lady Bears.
Jones is listed as questionable for Baylor’s regular season home finale Wednesday night against Missouri when she and Whitney Zachariason will be recognized on senior night.
Jones got hurt in the closing minutes of Baylor’s 82-81 win Sunday at Oklahoma. She was taken the Norman Regional Hospital after the game, then returned to Waco and was undergoing further evaluation Monday.
Baylor, which can clinch the Big 12 regular season title with a win Wednesday, is set to host first- and second-round games of the NCAA tournament.
