Shepas breaks school record, but Jackets fall short
Maria Shepas broke the school scoring record for Waynesburg University, but it wasn’t enough as Medialle down the Yellow Jackets 17-9 at Wiley Stadium in women’s lacrosse play Saturday.
Shepas scored seven goals for Waynesburg (0-3), setting new marks for both goals in a game and points in a game.
She scored the first goal to cut the deficit to 2-1, but Waynesburg would move no closer to the lead the rest of the way.
The Mavericks (1-1) scored the next four goals and had a six-goal spurt in the second half to end any threat of a Waynesburg comeback.
Erin Burry made 16 saves for Waynesburg, which returns to play Thursday to host Wilson College.
Men’s baseball
California (Pa.) 9, Slippery Rock 2; Slippery Rock 7, California 5 – California opened PSAC West play at Ross Memorial Park in Washington with a split.
Randy Sturgill earned the win in game one with a complete game. Sturgill (5-0) allowed two earned runs, walked one and struck out eight batters in seven innings.
The Vulcans (11-6) trailed 1-0 in the second but responded in the bottom of the inning to tie the contest.
California churned out four runs in the fourth to take command of the game.
Four more runs in the sixth sealed the win as four players had multiple hits. Kyle Petty hit 3-for-3 with two RBI.
George Herbert (1-2) took the loss for the Rock (8-8).
The Vulcans led 5-2 in the nightcap until a six-hit seventh inning made the score 7-5. Tyler Zimm pitched a no decision and Petty took the loss after pitching 2/3 of an inning.
Casey Teagarden paced the offense with a 3-for-3 game and scoring two runs.
Zach Jeney (1-1) earned the win for Slippery Rock.
The teams square off today in Slippery Rock for a doubleheader slated for a 1 p.m. start.
Bethany 8, Delaware Valley 5 – Bethany ended its swing through Florida Friday with a comeback win.
Bethany (4-2) took a 1-0 lead after two innings, but the Aggies scored four runs in the third to force the Bison to play from behind the rest of the way.
Runs in the fourth and sixth innings cut the lead to one until Delaware Valley added another run in the top of the seventh.
A five-run seventh inning put Bethany ahead 8-5.
Brad Kubis earned his second save of the year and 14th of his career, one shy of the school record set by Ian Edwards in 2006.
California graduate Zac Edmiston earned the win from the hill, despite pitching just one inning and whiffing one batter. Starter Zak Kozlowski hurled six innings, striking out six, walking one and hitting another.
Laurel Highlands product Eric Fudala was active at the plate, driving in a run on two hits, including a double.
The Bison return to action Tuesday, traveling to Penn State Beaver for a 3 p.m. start.
Penn State Behrend 6, Waynesburg 2; Penn State Behrend 6, Waynesburg 4 – Three quick runs in the first two innings of game one set the tone for a sweep.
The Lions (7-3) scored three runs in two innings, chasing Waynesburg starter Anthony Longo after four innings. He allowed five runs, walking two and striking out one.
Waynesburg (2-10) added two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but that was all the offense the Jackets could muster as closer Chad Zurat pitched two shutout innings to earn the save.
In game two, Waynesburg found itself in another early hole, but responded to tie the game 3-3 after an inning.
Jesse Gonzalez took the loss for Waynesburg, allowing two more runs in the second inning.
Anthony DeFilippo led the offense, going 4-for-4 with a double in the second game and 5-for-6 on the afternoon.
Women’s softball
Waynesburg 15, Pitt-Greensburg 1 (5 innings); Waynesburg 14, Pitt-Greensburg 4 (6 innings) – Waynesburg overcame a long layoff to dominate Pitt-Greensburg in a non-conference game.
Waynesburg (6-4) hadn’t played since March 11, but wasted little time before pouncing on the Bobcats (2-6).
The Yellow Jackets scored eight runs in the second inning, powered by Amanda Baughman’s three-run home run.
Carrie Maier allowed three hits and struck out six batters in the win.
Waynesburg trailed 4-3 after three innings in game two, but scored 11 runs in the next three innings to enact the mercy rule.
Lauren Minor pitched three innings in the win, yielding five hits but only one earned run. Baughman pitched the remainder of the game for the save, fanning six batters.
Shannon Falleroni led the offense for the day, hitting 5-for-7 with a pair of doubles, three runs scored and seven RBI.
