Frazier harriers win Section 3-AA crown

The Frazier boys had one last hurdle to clear Tuesday afternoon for outright claim to the Section 3-AA cross country crown, and behind the duo of Sawyer Palonder and Cory Krall, the Commodores safely landed with a sweep of a triangular hosted by Chartiers-Houston.

Frazier defeated Chartiers-Houston, 24-32, and both teams defeated an undermanned Avella, 15-50. The section title is the second in a row for the Commodores.

Palonder finished undefeated in section action, winning in 18:44. Krall was second with a time of 19:08. Teammate Ryan Maurer was fifth in 20:08. Christian Katic was seventh in 20:45 and Tanner Murt finished ninth in 21:06. Zack Poling displaced runners with his 10th-place finish in 21:39, and Ian Barota was 12th in 22:14.

“I knew Chartiers-Houston had three fairly good runners. I wanted Sawyer and Cory to pace each other. Ryan broke up their three runners. They all ran as a team,” said Frazier coach Joe Turek.

None of the teams had five runners. Frazier’s Christina Babyak won in 28:02 with teammate Amber Starr finishing just nine seconds later. Chelsea Klem was fifth in 29:25.

Uniontown 22, Connellsville 37; Uniontown 17, Elizabeth-Forward 46; Connellsville 18, Elizabeth-Forward 43 — The Red Raiders capped the section schedule and prepped for Thursday’s county meet by sweeping a Section 2-AAA home triangular at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus.

Uniontown (8-1) finishes in second place with a 6-1 record. Connellsville goes to 5-2 with the split.

The Falcons’ Michael Jacobyansky finished first in 18:02. Uniontown’s Brady Guthrie was secdond in 18:13, two seconds ahead of teammates Braden Carei and Nate Edenfield. Connellsville’s Jace Mascioli was fifth in 18:44.

Lucas Edenfield (7, 19:14), Torin Kelley (8, 19:17) and Paul Klatt (9, 19:23) rounded out the top 10 finishers for the Red Raiders.

Matt Cramer (9, 19:20), Robert Coffman (12, 19:29) and Joe Baughman (13, 20:00) closed out the top-five performances for Connellsville.

Both teams return to action Thursday afternoon in the FCCA Cross Country Championships at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus.

Girls cross country

Uniontown 15, Connellsville 50; Uniontown 15, Elizabeth-Forward 50; Elizabeth-Forward 15, Connellsville 50 — The Lady Raiders took the top six places for an easy sweep on the Section 2-AAA finale at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus.

Uniontown (8-1) finishes second to Laurel Highlands with a 6-1 record.

The Lady Raiders’ Rachel Diamond and Julie Gerber shared first place, finishing in 23:06. Paige Tibbe was third in 23:31, one second ahead of Julie Friend. Violet Kern was fifth in 23:45.

Girls volleyball

Uniontown 3, Brownsville 1 – The Lady Falcons won the third set, 25-19, but the Lady Raiders closed out the Section 7-AA home match in the fourth set, 25-19. Uniontown won the first two sets, 25-13, 25-9.

Uniontown improves to 7-1 in the section and 10-1 overall. Brownsville slips to 1-7 in the section and 1-12 overall.

The Lady Raiders’ Taylor Campbell had seven kills and six aces. Hanna Wagner finished with seven digs. Meagan Springer had nine aces, and Tori Campbell had a team-high eight kills. Jessy Madison finished with six kills. Kaylee Swaney distributed 15 assists.

Skylar Wellington had seven service points, three aces and two blocks for Brownsville. Whitney Ptak had eight kills and four blocks.

California 3, Jefferson-Morgan 2 – The Lady Trojans won the first two sets, and the last set for a Section 5-A home win against the Lady Rockets.

California (4-5, 6-5) won the first two sets, 25-21, 25-18. Jefferson-Morgan won the next two, 25-10, 25-18, and the Lady Trojans closed with a 15-8 win in the fifth and final set.

Frazier 3, Mapletown 0 — The Commodores remained perfect with relative ease in Section 5-A with a straight set victory against the visiting Maples.

Cassidy Guiser and Kelsey Dillon both had double digit service points, with 17 and 14 respectively.

Frazier improved to 9-0 in the section and 10-1 overall while Mapletown dropped to 0-8 in the section and 3-11 overall.

Geibel 3, West Greene 0 — The Gators remained in the Section 5-A playoff chase by sweeping the visiting Pioneers 3-0.

Marissa Galloway tallied 19 assists while Rachel Erdely and Rachel Elias each had six kills for Geibel (6-4, 6-4).

Megan Reeves led the Pioneers (2-7, 5-9) with 10 assists.

Geibel is next in action Thursday at Mapletown.

Canon-McMillan 3, Albert Gallatin 0 — The visiting Big Macs swept past the Colonials in Section 2-AAA play. Kasey Rankin had 10 digs for AG, who dropped to 0-9 in the section and 4-9 overall.

They are back in action Thursday at Ringgold.

Boys soccer

McKeesport 6, Albert Gallatin 2 — Trailing 3-0 at halftime, Pedro Oliveiro and Kyle Oldland scored goals in the second half, but the Tigers added three more for a Section 4-AAA home victory.

The Colonials’ Ryan Stewart made 17 saves.

Albert Gallatin falls to 0-9-0 in the section and 0-13-0 overall. McKeesport improves to 2-7-0 in the section and 2-12-0 overall.

Monessen 7, Brownsville 0 — Monessen scored seven second half goals to break a scoreless tie to rout Brownsville in a Section 4-A match Tuesday afternoon.

Alex Pieciarialli netted two goals for the Greyhounds as they improved to 3-4-1.

John Didominic had 11 saves for the Falcons, who fell to 1-8 in the section.
