Garlowich breaks tape in Red Ribbon 5K

Scottdale’s Michael Garlowich fought throw steady snow showers, puddles and mud early Saturday morning to finish first in the sixth annual FCDAC, Inc., Red Ribbon 5K Run/Walk.

Garlowich, a senior on the Southmoreland cross country team, completed the 5K course around the Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus and the adjacent business park in 19:17. Waltersburg Kevin Diamond finished second in 20 minutes, just four seconds ahead of Connellsville’s Francis Molinaro.

Mount Pleasant’s Dana Newlin, Yough’s cross country coach, was the first female, and seventh overall, across the finish line in 22:56. Scottdale’s Maria Garlowich was second in 25:40, and Belle Vernon’s Nora Dzurko was third with a time of 27:54.

Uniontown’s Dennis Cropp won the 5K walk in 32:36. Connellsville’s Jason Soltis was second in 32:43, and Brownsville’s Frank Ptak finished third with a time of 34:42.

Connellsville’s Leanne Kurpiel won the women’s 5K walk with a time of 31:26. Dunbar’s Debbie McGee finished second in 33:43, and Hopwood’s Gloria Antoon was third in 34:25.

Nearly 90 runners and walkers braved the nasty conditions in support of the FCDAC, Inc.’s Red Ribbon campaign.
