Changes here for sports coverage

3 min read

In case you haven’t heard, fall sports get under way in full force tonight, with the opening night of high school football.

Golf and girls tennis began their seasons within the last week and action in those sports continues through the fall.

Football, of course, kicks off tonight, with 11 games on tap involving the area’s 16 teams. Uniontown travels to Connellsville in the highlight game of opening night, while Southmoreland visits Brownsville, Beth-Center hosts Frazier, Mapletown travels to California and Jefferson-Morgan visits West Greene in games involving two area teams.

The area’s other six teams are all on the road, with Albert Gallatin visiting Steel Valley, Belle Vernon traveling to Hopewell, Carmichaels at Leechburg, Geibel Catholic at Monessen, Laurel Highlands at McGuffey and Waynesburg Central at Greensburg Central Catholic.

For more information about the area’s football teams, please see our supplement, “Football 2011,” which is part of today’s edition.

In an effort to get information about tonight’s games to our customers as quickly as possible, we are changing how we publicize that sport.

If you check our website, heraldstandard.com, after 2 a.m. Saturday, you will find complete game stories and summaries of Friday night’s action. Once on our site, click on our High School Football section and select the school you wish to read about.

We will then publish capsule versions of football game stories in our Sunday print edition with a breakdown of conference standings and schedule of games for the following week.

Coaches and statisticians are reminded to call with results at 800-261-7147 as soon as possible after a game ends.

Actually, that holds true for all sports coaches and statisticians and it is doubly important that results of during-the-week sports are submitted to us as quickly as possible.

Earlier deadlines during the week might make it difficult to publish results of all evening events. Afternoon events, like golf, tennis and cross country will definitely be published in the next day’s edition.

Evening events, like boys and girls soccer and girls volleyball, may come into too late for the next day’s newspaper. But we are asking coaches to please call the same day as the event occurs. We will publish the results either in the next day’s edition or in the following day’s edition.

As usual, we will do our best to publish all results as quickly as we can. Also, we will try to cover as many teams and events as we can.

We want both the print edition of HeraldStandard.com and our website, heraldstandard.com, to be your primary source of local sports information.
