Brownsville netters shut out Lady Scots, 5-0

Brownsville dropped just 12 games, sweeping past Southmoreland, 5-0, Wednesday afternoon for a Section 1-AA road victory.

Sarah Shashura rolled past the Lady Scots’ Ashley Belzer, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles. The Lady Falcons’ Megan Yocabet secured a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles over Marrissa Luden, and Kayla Bayne completed the sweep with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over Caitland Harman.

Ashtyn Guty/Payton Ferguson won their No. 1 doubles match against Kirsty Fogg and Clarissa Horak, 6-0, 6-2, and Angie Becker and Sari Yuhas closed the match with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Kayla Jones and Cindy Servi at No. 2 doubles.

Brownsville (4-1, 4-1) hosts Mount Pleasant this afternoon. Southmoreland slips to 1-4 in the section and 2-5 overall.

Boys cross country

Yough 26, Frazier 29; Frazier 15, Albert Gallatin 50; Yough 15, Albert Gallatin 50 — The Commodores’ Sawyer Polander and Cory Krall finished 1-2, and four Colonials placed in the top 14, but the Cougars escaped with two victories in the non-section triangular held at Sampey Park.

Polander completed the 5K course in 18:06, nearly a minute ahead of Krall. Teammate Christian Katic finished 10th overall in 21:10 to give Frazier three runners in the top 10.

The Colonials had only four runners, led by Kyle Oldland in fourth place with a time of 19:44. Tyler Garlick finished four seconds later. Kyle Zinn was seventh in 20:40.

Frazier (1-1) is off until Tuesday, Sept. 20, when the Section 3-A schedule begins when the Commodores face Geibel Catholic and Brownsville.

Boys golf

Mount Pleasant 194, Southmoreland 223 — The Vikings took a break from the section, defeating rival Southmoreland at Norvelt Golf Club.

Mount Pleasant’s Dustin Dent was medalist with a 1-over 35. Andrew Raffensperger finished with a 39, and Zac Heide, Brandon Springer and Ryan Hudec all shot 40.

“I was so pleased with the scores today. We threw out a 41. We had a break out day today,” praised Mount Pleasant coach Matt Gross.

Zac Black was the low man for the Scotties with a 3-over 39. Brandon Yuhouse finished with 41 and Aaron Vanfleet shot a 45.

Nick Wells added a 47.

Mount Pleasant improves to 6-0 overall.

Laurel Highlands 210, Albert Gallatin 229; Albert Gallatin 229, Jefferson-Morgan 232 — The Colonials earned a split with a non-section win against the Rockets and a Division I, Section 2 loss to the Mustangs.

Albert Gallatin’s Pat McDonough had medalist honors in the triangular with a 2-over 35.Ben Rozzi shot a 44, and both Brandon Kenney and Brandon Sutton both finished with 47.

Nick Ezzi was low man for Laurel Highlands (4-1, 4-2) with a 4-over 39. Jeremy Guzy finished with a 40, and Harison Laskey had 41. Vince Agostini and Kelsey Soom both shot 45.

Alex Rush had the low score for Jefferson-Morgan (3-3, 2-2) with a 44. Gillian Alexander shot 45, and both Zach Berkstresser and Brandon Faieta finished with 46.

California 222, Waynesburg Central 225 — The Raiders led through the finish of the first four golfers, but the final California twosome made up the difference for a Division II, Section 8 victory on the front nine at Cedarbrook Golf Course’s Gold course.

Derek Stein was medalist for the Trojans with a 5-over 41. Michael Langley finished with a 42, and Eric Rucci added a 43. Michael Luketich also broke 50 with a 46.

Aaron Haywood was low man for Waynesburg (1-1, 2-1) with a 4-over 40. Loren Dukate shot a 42, Emily Rohanna had a 43, and Dalton Haywood finished with 48.

California (2-1, 3-1) hosts Brownsville this afternoon.

Girls soccer

Greensburg Salem 2, Waynesburg Central 1 — The Lady Golden Lions scored the winner in overtime in the Section 1-AA opener for both teams.

The Lady Raiders scored first when Taylor Benson netted an unassisted goal in the 15th minute of the first half. Julia Camps made two saves for Waynesburg.

Waynesburg slips to 0-3-0 overall.

Hempfield 6, Connellsville 1 — The visiting Lady Spartans scored six unanswered goals for a Section 1-AAA victory.

Gabby Nichelson scored off an Ashton Grimm assist to spot the Lady Falcons to a 1-0 lead at 24:15, but Darian Sasko and Rebecca Brandnam scored within the final six minutes of the half to give Hempfield the lead.

Courtney Carroll, Chelsea Burkhart, Megan Boyle and Keirsten Van Horne scored in the second half.

Connellsville keeper Ally Ramsey turned aside 11 shots, while Hempfield’s Olivia Haile made two saves.

Connellsville (0-1-0, 1-1-0) hosts Mount Pleasant Saturday afternoon in a non-section match.

Girls volleyball

Laurel Highlands 3, Hempfield 0 — The Fillies swept past visiting Hempfield for a non-section victory. Laurel Highlands won by the scores 25-20, 25-23, 25-23.

Marissa Erminio had five kills, four blocks and 18 digs in the victory. Bressa Kasievich finished with 25 assists and two aces. Tessa Sova had a strong defensive game with 10 kills and 17 digs. Crista Swenglish contributed 12 digs.

Laurel Highlands (1-0) plays a non-section match Monday against McKeesport.
