Leopards close first half of season with win over Uniontown

Four Belle Vernon golfers shot 40 or better Friday afternoon, leading the Leopards to a 197-225 Division I, Section 2 victory over visiting Uniontown at Willowbrook Golf Course.

The Leopards close the first half of the section schedule with a 4-2 record, while improving to 4-3 overall. Uniontown slips to 2-4 in the section and 2-5 overall.

Kirby Manown led the charge for Belle Vernon with a 1-over 36. Matt Suchko finished with a 2-over 38, while Brad Antal and Ben Wolfe both shot 40. Chase Foglia closed the scoring with a 42.

Josh Nelson was the low man for Uniontown with a 7-over 43. Zack Nelson and Luke Wallace both shot 44, and Calli Abel and Joe Carpeal both finished with 47 to close the scoring rounds.

Men’s soccer

California (Pa.) 1, Pitt-Johnstown 0 — Senior Edin Sabic scored the lone goal of the match, leading the Vulcans past the Mountain Cats for a non-conference win.

Sabic’s unassisted goal, his second of the season, came at 36:52. Pitt-Johnstown’s Derik Swope had an opportunity to tie the match, but his penalty kick hit the post. Tyler Aldinger followed with a shot off the rebound, but California keeper Charlie Dagnal made the save.

Dagnal, the PSAC Athlete of the Week, recorded his fourth shutout of the season after making a career-high seven saves. He now has a 430-minute scoreless streak.

The Vulcans remain unbeaten, improving to 4-0-1 overall.
