Derry edges Lady Falcons, tightens Section 1-AA playoff race
The Section 1-AA match at Derry Wednesday afternoon was tied 2-2 with only the No. 2 doubles match on the court.
Derry’s pair of Tessa Hriczik and Jill Orazio came through for the home crowd, defeating Angie Becker and Sari Yuhas, 6-3, 6-2, to avenge a similar finish when the teams played at Brownsville.
Sarah Shashura won the lone singles match for Brownsville, defeating Felicia Pawlik, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles. The Lady Falcons’ No. 1 doubles team of Ashtyn Guty and Payton Ferguson defeated Laura Kowalik and Rachel Henderson at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 7-5.
The Lady Trojans’ Breana Liberoni defeated Megan Yocabet, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 singles, and Lauren Campbell needed three sets to defeat Brownsville’s Kayla Bayne at No. 3 singles, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3.
Brownsville is 6-2 in the section, while Derry improves to 5-3. Both teams will participate in Section 1-AA singles tournament today at Mount Pleasant.
Southmoreland 4, Jeannette 1 — The Lady Scots swept the singles and split the doubles for a Section 1-AA victory.
Ashley Belzer defeated Paige Wallace at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1, and Clarissa Horak won her No. 2 singles match against Liz Langford, 6-0, 6-4. Kirsty Figg completed the sweep at No. 3 singles, defeating Kerri Gilles, 6-1, 6-3.
Cindy Servi and Kayla Jones won their No. 2 doubles match, dropping only one game to Breanna Wy and Olivia Shults.
Southmoreland improves to 2-6 in the section and 3-7 overall.
Greensburg C.C. 5, California 0 — The Lady Centurions were too tough for the home squad, returning with a Section 1-AA victory.
Jackie Hauser defeated the Lady Trojans’ Miranda Hall at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-0. Alia Perez beat Taylor Tiano in straight sets at No. 2 singles, and Kelsey Brown needed a first-set tiebreaker to defeat Rachel Wohar at No. 3 singles.
California’s No. 1 doubles team of Courtney Pro and Elizabeth Wohar won the first set, 6-1, but Mary Taormina and Storm Chaffer rallied in the next two sets, 6-2, 6-2, for the win. Sarah Selip and Jordan Smithburger won their No. 2 doubles match in straight sets over Annie Zheng and Crystal Rook.
Boys golf
Frazier 227, Albert Gallatin 257 — The Commodores’ Tyler Rock and Robert Gondura shared medalist honors, finishing with 5-over 41, to lead the home team to a non-section win over the Colonials.
Josh Olbrys finished with a 46 for Frazier (7-2, 3-2), with Josh Miller (49) and Hunter Clay (50) closing the scoring.
Ben Rozzi was the low man for Albert Gallatin with a 12-over 48. Cullen Hoone shot a 50, and Brandon Kenney and Pat McDonough both finished with 52. Nik Myers’ 55 rounded out the scoring.
Albert Gallatin (4-5, 3-4) hosts Ringgold in a Division I, Section 2 match this afternoon at Duck Hollow Golf Club.
Jefferson-Morgan 212, Uniontown 216 — The Rockets’ Zack Berkstresser shot a 1-over 36 at Duck Hollow Golf Club as visiting Jefferson-Morgan defeated the Red Raiders for a non-section win.
Gillian Alexander finished with a 42, and Alex Rush shot a 43. Cameron Roberts (44) and Brandon Faieta (47) also factored in the scoring.
Josh Nelson returned to the Uniontown lineup and shared Uniontown scoring honors with Luke Wallace with a 3-over 38. John Voyten and Joe Carpeal both shot 46, and Callahan Abel rounded out the scoring with a 48.
Uniontown (3-4, 3-6) has an open date today, while Jefferson-Morgan (4-1, 5-3) is on the road at Carmichaels Golf Club against Brownsville.
Girls volleyball
Carmichaels 3, Brownsville 2 — The Lady Falcons tied the match, winning the third and fourth sets, but the visitors came back in the fifth set for a non-section road victory.
Carmichaels opened a 2-0 lead, winning the first two sets, 25-21, 25-14. Brownsville countered in the next two sets, 25-23, 25-15, and Carmichaels secured the win in the fifth set, 15-12.
Skylar Wellington finished with 19 service points and three blocks for Brownsville (0-2), and Franchesca Legros added 12 service points, five kills and two blocks. Whitney Ptak had seven kills and three blocks, and Asya Settles also had seven kills.
Marissa Krall led the Lady Mikes (2-2, 1-2) with 19 service points and eight kills. Sarah Hathaway finished with eight service points, and Amanda Brown added 12 kills.
Brownsville returns to Section 7-AA action tonight at McGuffey.
Women’s volleyball
Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus 3, Penn State-Greater Allegheny 0 — The Lady Roaring Lions swept past their hosts in three sets, winning 25-8, 25-12, 25-20, for a PSUAC victory.
Penn State Fayette improves to 4-0 in the conference and 7-3 overall.
Katy Sleasman led the Lady Roaring Lions with 22 assists, adding 11 service points and five kills. Marisa Wallace finished with 10 service points. Marney Hillen and Kaitlin Fidel both had five kills, and Victoria Kearn, Samantha Helmantoler and Janelle Cooper all had 10 digs.
Girls soccer
St. Joseph 7, Geibel Catholic 0 — The Lady Spartans scored three goals in the first half and added four more in the final 40 minutes, returning home to Natrona Heights with a Section 4-A victory over the Lady Gators.
Geibel split the goalkeeper duties with Brittany Rulli turning aside 12 shots in the first half and Amanda Hanabeck making 11 saves in the second half.
The Lady Gators (0-2, 2-3) return to action Saturday with a non-section match at Connellsville.

California 238, Beth-Center 286 — Derek Stein shot a 43 to lead the Trojans to a Division II, Section 8 victory over the Bulldogs.
Eric Rucci finished with a 46, Brett Schwalb shot a 48, and Michael Luketich carded a 50. Michael Langley’s 51 rounded out the scoring.
Tyler Koontz was the low man for Beth-Center with a 53. Tyler Sabatula and Dion Frey both shot 54.
Boys soccer
Baldwin 11, Albert Gallatin 0 — The Section 4-AAA match was close at halftime, but the Highlanders blew the game open with nine goals in the second half to defeat the visiting Colonials.
Albert Gallatin goalkeeper Ryan Stewart made 31 saves. Albert Gallatin (0-1) hosts Mt. Lebanon tonight.
