Local golfers advance
Golfers had a tough day on the course Monday in the various section qualifiers, but several managed to make the cut and advance through to the next round.
The top five golfers at each of the eight sites in both Division I and Division II automatically advanced, as well as any golfer within 10 strokes of the course rating.
Belle Vernon’s Kirby Manown was the medalist at the Division I, Section 2 qualifier at Norvelt Golf Course, finishing with a 2-over 74. Laurel Highlands’ Harison Laskey and Uniontown’s Luke Wallace both shot 6-over 78. Mount Pleasant’s Zac Heide shot a 79. Belle Vernon’s Brad Antal and Mount Pleasant’s Andrew Raffensperger rounded out the qualifiers, both shooting 81. The course rating at Norvelt Golf Course was 68.
These six golfers advance to one of the three Division I semifinal sites on Tuesday, Sept. 27.
Six golfers survived a miserable, rainy day at the Division II, Section 8 qualifier hosted by Greene County Country Club to advance to the Division II Championship to be held on Monday, Sept. 26, at New Castle Country Club. Greene County Country Club is Par 72 with a course rating of 71.8.
Waynesburg Central’s Loren Dukate was medalist with a 2-over 74. Jefferson-Morgan’s Alex Rush finished second with an 83. Teammate Zack Berkstresser advanced with an 84, and Waynesburg’s Aaron Haywood earned a berth with an 85. Beth-Center’s Taylor Dingle and Carmichaels’ Justin Newman both shot 88 to grab to final two spots.
The sectional qualifiers for the girls will be held Wednesday.
