Pioneers fall to Beth-Center, 18-1

The Bulldogs scored 15 runs in the second inning en route to a Section 1-A road victory at West Greene on Friday afternoon.

Winning pitcher Mike Knox had five strikeouts against the Pioneers.

C.J. Gillin legged out a double for West Greene’s only extra-base hit.

Josh Miller and C.J. Novak each had a double for the Bulldogs. Novak also had a triple, as did teammate Tyler Sabatula.

West Greene falls to 4-6 overall, and 1-2 in the section. Beth-Center is now 3-3 overall, and improves to 2-1 in section play.

Frazier 6, Charleroi 4 — Frazier’s Adam Cook struck out four, leading the Commodores to a Section 2-AA victory against visiting Charleroi.

Jamie Fell had the only extra-base hit of the game, a triple, for the Commodores.

Frazier improves to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the section.

Waynesburg Central 10, Southmoreland 0 — Alex Swauger improved to 2-0, striking out nine and had a double to lead the Raiders to a Section 2-AA home win.

Bo Hampson had a triple for Waynesburg Central.

Michael Baird legged out a double for the Scotties, while teammate Brandon Galley had a triple.

The Raiders improve to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in section play. Southmoreland slips to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the section.

Jefferson-Morgan 11, Geibel Catholic 10 — The Rockets had a close Section 1-A victory, defeating the visiting Gators.

Geibel Catholic pitcher Mike Noonan struck out seven and had two doubles against the Rockets. Teammate Matt Marmarella also had a double for the Gators (2-4, 1-2).

Jordan Dicks and Caleb Pataski each had a double for Jefferson-Morgan (3-5, 1-1), along with Logan Bowman, who also had four RBI.

Penn-Trafford 10, Laurel Highlands 8 — The Warriors rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for a Section 2-AAAA victory over the Mustangs.

Penn-Trafford (2-2) scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Laurel Highlands (1-2, 2-7) countered with four runs in the top of the second and single runs in the fourth and fifth to tie the game.

After the Warriors scored three in the fourth, the Mustangs came back with a run in the top of the fifth. Penn-Trafford scored one in the sixth and Laurel Highlands closed the scoring with a single run in the top of the seventh.

Drew Yauger, Mike Petrocelli, Jake Kearns and Anthony Hanula all doubled for the Mustangs. Yauger and Kearns also singled. Mike Bochnak started and took the loss, striking out five and walking four while allowing eight runs (four earned).

Dan Awoc earned the win, striking out four and walking four. Dan Marista led the attack with a double and two singles.

Ringgold 12, Uniontown 11 — The winning run came around from second base as the Red Raiders attempted to turn an inning-ending double play in Section 2-AAA action.

Uniontown (1-3, 2-4) tied the game with five runs in the top of the seventh inning with two outs and down to its last strike. The Red Raiders had eight consecutive runners reach, stranding runners at second and third with an inning-ending strikeout.

Justin Rich earned the win and led the Rams with a single and double.

Dylan Stinger (0-1) took the loss, pitching the sixth and seventh innings. He allowed four runs, but only two were earned.

Dan Litman led the Uniontown offense with three singles. Luke Wallace, Chase Manches and Michael Haines all had two singles.

High school softball

Carmichaels 18, Mapletown 0 — Carmichaels freshman Erica Burns struck out 11, leading the Lady Mikes to a Section 2-A victory at Mapletown.

Carmichaels’ Sarah Hathaway, Amanda Brown, Regina Menhart, and Caroline Cree each legged out a double, while teammate Megan Berardi had a pair.

Albert Gallatin 11, Laurel Highlands 1 — The Lady Colonials turned a close game into a rout with a victory over the Fillies in non-section play.

Shienna Ross picked up the win for Albert Gallatin (1-6) with eight strikeouts and five walks. Ross also doubled. Teammate Brittany Bork had a double.

Laurel Highlands’ Kristina Hudock and Morgan Miller doubled.

Mallory Mansberry suffered the loss for the Fillies (1-2, 1-7). Mansberry had five strikeouts and nine walks.

Leading 3-1 heading into the fifth, the Lady Colonials scored three for a 6-1 lead. They added four in the six and one in the seventh.

West Greene 14, California 2 — Winning pitcher Paige Moninger struck out five, leading the Lady Pioneers to a Section 2-A victory at California.

California’s Tina Puhnaty and Rachel Ferry each had a double.

Lauren Weaver, Macy McMillan, Autumn Widdup and Megan Reeves all had doubles for West Greene. Reeves also had a triple, three RBI, and scored two points for the Lady Pioneers.

West Greene rises to 7-4 overall, 2-2 in the section. California falls to 3-6, 1-3.

Brownsville 8, Bentworth 6 — The Lady Falcons’ Miranda Arison improved to 6-3 after striking out 12 leading to lead Brownsville to a Section 2-AA victory at Bentworth.

Katie Whyel, Miranda Nichola and Payton Ferguson each had a double for Brownsville (6-3, 4-2).

Thursday’s Games

Girls track & field

Southmoreland 124, Serra Catholic 14; Southmoreland 131, Clairton 8 — The Lady Scots had no problems with the visiting Lady Eagles and Lady Bears Thursday afternoon for a Section 4-AA triangular sweep.

Taylor Grimm (100, 13.3; 200, 28.9), Emily Lessman (high jump, 5-0), Emily Zelinka (javelin, 89-6), Jessica Suhan (1,600, 6:36), and Paige Weaver (400, 1:07.2; 800, 2:55.2) were among the individual event winners for Southmoreland, who finished first in all but one event against Serra Catholic and carried all the first-place finishes against Clairton.

Southmoreland improves to 6-0 in the section.

Boys track & field

Southmoreland 145, Serra Catholic 5; Southmoreland 124, Clairton 26 — The Scotties swept past the visiting Bears and Eagles Thursday afternoon, securing a sweep of a Section 4-AA triangular and remain unbeaten.

Southmoreland improves to 6-0 in the section.

The Scotties finished first in 15-of-18 events against Clairton, and carried all the first-place finishes against Serra Catholic. The Bears won the 400 relay, 200, and 100.

Josh Dei won the 1,600 (5:03.5) and 3,200 (11:36), and opened the Scots’ victorious 3,200 relay.

Tyler Ramsey won the 100 (11.52). Randy Ohler (110 high hurdles, 17.06; 400, 56.1; long jump, 18-11), Rory Keefer (300 intermediate hurdles, 44.1), Derek Walter (800, 2:22.3), Kevin Bundridge (triple jump, 35-3; high jump, 5-6), Adam Bundridge (shot put, 45-6; discus, 125-8), Austin DeWitt (javelin, 132-2), and Nathan Killiany (pole vault, 9-0) also had first-place finishes.
