Maples beat North Catholic for first win of season

The Maples won the final four bouts Wednesday, rallying Mapletown to a 42-36 non-section victory over visiting North Catholic for the first victory since the resurrection of the wrestling program.

Brandon Rimmel started the Mapletown run at 126 pounds with a win by forfeit. Brandon Schaum pinned Nick Pitrone at 2:30 for a key six points at 132, and Tyler Rumble tied the match with a win by forfeit at 138 pounds.

Shawn Kelly secured the victory in the final bout at 145 pounds when he pinned Sam Kimko in 1:01.

Dylan Rogers opened the match for Mapletown at 152 pounds with a pin of Bailey Simon in 1:24. Kyle Gray won by injury default at 220, and Sam Smitley won by forfeit at 106 pounds.

Belle Vernon 45, Albert Gallatin 36 – The Leopards used forfeits at 182 and 106 pounds to edge the visiting Colonials for a Section 2-AAA (2A) victory.

Adam Nickelson (195), Nathan Russo (113), Brendan Hasson (120), Zachary Weight (160), and Cole Pierce (170) all won by fall for Belle Vernon. Ben Ankron won by decision at 220.

Albert Gallatin scored all its points via fall or forfeit. John Phillips (285), Brady Howell (132), Schuyler Moncheck (138), Matt Walters (145), and Collin Smith (152) all won by fall. Kody Valentine won by forfeit at 126.

Albert Gallatin (1-2, 1-3) wrestles Jefferson-Morgan tonight. Belle Vernon improves to 1-1 in the section.

Women’s basketball

Waynesburg 59, Saint Vincent 53 – The Yellow Jackets held a three-point lead at halftime, and doubled the advantage in the second half for a PAC road victory over the Lady Bearcats.

Waynesburg made six 3-pointers to Saint Vincent’s two, and the Yellow Jackets held an 11-7 advantage from the free throw line.

Brittany Spencer led Waynesburg (5-0, 10-2) with a double-double, scoring 10 points while grabbing a team-high 18 reobounds. Hannah Hunter, recently named PAC Player of the Week, finished with a game-high 18 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Elaine Hasek was also in double figures with 13 points.

Brittany Sedlock scored 13 points and pulled down a game-high 20 rebounds for Saint Vincent (4-1, 9-3). Emily Fenton finished with 10 rebounds.

Boys basketball

Beth-Center 59, Mapletown 54 – The visiting Bulldogs pulled away with a 14-5 second quarter, and then held off the Maples for a non-section road victory.

Mapletown trailed 30-20 at halftime, but outscored the visitors, 34-29, in final 16 minutes.

Kevin Ridgley scored a game- and season-high 26 points for Mapletown, including six 3-pointers. Derek Riggleman added 14 points.

Mike Knox led Beth-Center (3-5) with 25 points. Josh Miller finished with 10.

Mapletown (0-9) returns to Section 3-A action Friday on the road at Avella.

Girls basketball

Beth-Center 67, California 51 – Anna Shashura scored a game-high 23 points, including 8-of-8 from the free throw line, to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a non-section road win Tuesday night.

Beth-Center led 16-11, 28-21 and 47-38 at the quarter breaks, closing the game with a 20-13 fourth quarter.

Anna Bartman scored 20 for the Lady Bulldogs (6-3), while Rachel Sabatini added 10.

Courtnee McMasters led the Lady Trojans with 21 points. Tristen Conaway added 10.
