Uniontown remains perfect in Section 3-AAA play following a 55-35 victory over Greensburg Salem Monday at AJ Everhart Memorial Gymnasium.

The Lady Raiders (5-0, 8-2) led for most of the game, but the Lady Lions (2-2, 5-5) cut the lead to seven at 33-26 in the fourth quarter following two free throws from Jayne Oberdorf.

Uniontown stepped it up, outscoring Greensburg Salem 22-9 the rest of the way.

“I thought Greensburg played hard for the full 32 minutes,” Uniontown coach Jason Winfrey said. “We didn’t play that well in the first few minutes of the fourth, but came back to finish strong. We didn’t play with the kind of intensity we have to for the whole game.”

The Lady Lions had a tough night shooting, but coach Janine Vertacnik was pleased with her team’s defensive effort.

“We have to shoot the ball better,” Vertacnik said. “Defensively, I would put us up against anybody. They have speed and depth. We are trying to rebuild this program. I am proud of the way my kids played.”

The Lady Lions led 2-0 and 4-2 early on, but couldn’t get shots to fall as the Lady Raiders led 9-4 after the first quarter.

Uniontown extended its lead to 24-11 at halftime as Greensburg Salem couldn’t find the basket. The Lady Lions only made two field goals in the first half.

“We couldn’t shoot in the first half,” Vertacnik said. “If we had made some shots early it may have been a different game.”

The Lady Raiders outscored the Lady Lions, 9-8, in the third to take a 33-19 lead into the fourth.

“We weren’t finishing on our second-shot opportunities,” Winfrey said. “We have to have the right attitude. I really wasn’t pleased with our rebounding.”

Jazmin Belt led Uniontown in scoring with 15 points, including two from behind the arc.

Teammates Danasha Harris and Jessy Madison each scored 14.

Harris shot 6-for-9 from the charity stripe as Madison shot 6-of-7 from the foul line.

Oberdorf led all scorers with 18, including two 3-pointers.

“Our girls did a good job on Madison in the first half,” Vertacnik said. “We play with a lot of heart. I am very proud of them.”

Winfrey was to the point on moving forward.

“We have to get better,” Winfrey said.

Uniontown returns to action Thursday, traveling to Derry.

Greensburg Salem hosts Indiana Thursday.
