Cal’s Gates finishes second in 100 breaststroke
California University of Pa.’s Melissa Gates already had one All-America performance at the NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships, and doubled that amount Friday evening when she finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Gates completed the race in 1:03.38, just over a second behind Wayne State’s Kayla Scott.
Boys swimming
PIAA Championships — Laurel Highlands’ Justin Kostelnik finished 21st in the Class AAA 500 freestyle in 4:46.36 and 22nd in the 100 butterfly in 53.37 seconds.
Mount Pleasant’s Dillon Zarycki was 27th in the Class AA 50 freestyle with a time of 23.12 seconds.
Girls swimming
PIAA Championships — Mount Pleasant’s Fallon Nelson just missed the consolation finals, finishing 17th in the Class AA 200 freestyle with a time of 1:59.09.
Teammate Alyssa Dombrosky was 28th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:19.06.
College wrestling
Pittsburgh’s Ethan Headlee won two bouts Friday to stay alive in the consolations of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, but the Waynesburg Central grad’s bid for a spot on the medals podium at 174 pounds came to an end with an overtime loss in the fifth round of the consolations.
Headlee dropped a 3-1 overtime decision to Michigan’s Justin Zeerip after defeating Ohio’s Nick Purdue, 6-4, and Nebraska’s Tyler Koehn, 5-0.
Teammate Patrick Tasser, a Belle Vernon graduate, lost his first bout of the consolations, a 5-0 decision to Michigan’s Benjamin Apland.
After winning his opening bout Thursday at 174 pounds, West Virginia’s Lance Bryson (25-, an Albert Gallatin grad, lost in the third round of the championship flight, a 2-0 decision to Minnesota’s Logan Storley, and then dropped a 7-3 decision to Citadel’s Turtogtokh Luvsandroj in the fourth round of the consolations.
