Chartiers-Houston edges Brownsville, 3-2
The Jackets will try to keep their winning streak going on Tuesday, March 27, when they host NAIA opponent Carlow University. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
The Charties-Houston No. 1 doubles team of Jake Fulton and Tyler Cregut clinched the Section 1-AA victory for the visiting Bucs, edging Brownsville, 3-2.
The duo defeated Devan Drilak and Scott Gardner in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.
Freshman Ryan Hartz led the Bucs’ Josh St. Clair, 6-4, but Chartiers-Houston’s No. 1 singles player rallied in the next two sets, 6-4, 6-0, for the victory. Adam Armstrong defeated Brownsville’s Nic Calvaresi at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-3.
Cameron Smith won the lone singles match for the Falcons, taking the No. 2 singles match from Dan Lukich, 6-4, 6-1. Derek Lent and Nick Zelner won No. 2 doubles for Brownsville, defeating Austin Stevenson and Zack Bonazza, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-6 (4).
Brownsville (0-2, 1-2) travels to Connellsville this afternoon for a non-section match.
Mount Pleasant 5, California 0 – The Vikings swept past the Trojans without dropping a set for a road Section 1-AA victory.
Mount Pleasant’s doubles teams of E.S. DeSabato and Tyler Secosky and Alex Temple and Adam McClain did not lose a game, defeating Michael Christopher and Spencer Doman and Marshall Craig and Josh Buyers.
Clayton Howard beat California’s No. 1 singles player John Michael Mihalek, 6-0, 6-0. Chris Mull lost six games in his victory at No. 2 singles over the Trojans’ Mario Tiberie, and Kevin Chearney lost one game in his victory at No. 3 singles over Lucas Tranchita.
California slips to 0-2 in the section as well as overall.
Women’s lacrosse
Saint Vincent 21, Waynesburg 7 – The Yellow Jackets led 2-1 after goals by Maria Shepas and Toria Shepherd, but the Lady Bearcats rallied with four goals to regain control of the match on their way to a home victory.
Mandy Ormsby and Shepherd responded with goals to make it 5-4, and then Saint Vincent scored nine unanswered goals to put the match away.
Ormsby, Shepherd and Shepas closed the scoring for the Yellow Jackets.
College softball
California (Pa.) 5, West Liberty State (W.Va.) 1; California 4, West Liberty 0 – Kaitlyn Schilling and Hope Spancake held the Hilltoppers to only one run in the non-conference doubleheader, as the Vulcans swept their home-opening doubleheader
Spancake (9-1) won her ninth-consecutive start, holding West Liberty to one earned run in seven innings. She struck out eight and walked none, and didn’t allow a hit over the first six innings.
Every starter had at least one hit in the opener with Jillian Russell going 2-for-2. Waynesburg Central’s Breanna Morris had an RBI single in the first inning, and former Raider Alyson Johnson had an RBI double.
Schilling pitched a 6-hitter in the nightcap, improving to 7-2 with the win. She struck out three and walked none.
Johnson had an RBI singles in the second game. Katie Natter and Shelby Heyd both had two hits in the second game.
California improves to 17-3 overall, while the Hilltoppers fall to 5-18.
Waynesburg 8, Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus 1; Waynesburg 11, Penn State Fayette 4 — Madison Presto sparked the Yellow Jackets in the first game, and Haley Payne did the same in the nightcap for a non-conference sweep of the Lady Roaring Lions.
Presto had a two-run single in the fourth inning in the opener, and added a sacrifice fly for three RBI.
Jenn Ling earned the win, allowing six hits and allowed just one walk. Rachael Moon and Ashley Clarke both had two hits and two runs scored.
Payne’s two-run single in the top of the first in the second game got things rolling for the visitors. Emily Sorton had a two-run double and Brittany Ellis added a two-run single in the top of the third inning.
Carrie Maier earned the win in the nightcap to improve to 5-2. She allowed four earned runs on eights hits, walking one and striking out three. Sorton went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Payne had a double and single, two RBI and two runs scored.
