Rockets return home smiling, sweep Section 6-AA meet
Jefferson-Morgan boys track & field coach John Tennant had a big smile on his face Thursday afternoon as he left the Section 6-AA triangular meet at Waynesburg Central.
His Rockets upended Waynesburg Central, 76-68, for a rare victory over the Raiders. They completed the sweep with an 82-54 win over Beth-Center.
Waynesburg Central earned a split, defeating the Bulldogs 84-61.
Tennant was all smiles after the points were added up and his team came out on top. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing,” his score keeper said, and he added “I’m really happy about it.”
Jefferson-Morgan’s AJ Ricci scored some points in his first track meet, finishing first in the 3200 against Beth-Center and second against Waynesburg. “My first meet was exciting,” Ricci said, “I’m just looking to improve.”
Milton Sibanda finished first in two events for the Rockets against both teams, winning the long jump with a 19-3 jump, and the triple jump with a jump of 38 feet, 3½ inches. Chris Shaw earned three first places, one in the 100 (12.8) and two in the 200 (24.4).
The Rockets finished with a total of seven first places over Waynesburg Central, and nine over Beth-Center.
Waynesburg distance runner Cameron Jacobs earned a first place spot against both teams in the 1600 (5:01) and the 800 (2:18.23). Jacobs said, “Overall, I’m pleased,” before adding, “It’s a good start, it gives me room to improve.”
Raiders’ Ryan Cole finished the meet with two first places against each team, jumping 5-6 in the high jump, and vaulting 12-6.
Beth-Center’s Sal Faieta had a “good start” in the first meet of the season. “I was aiming for the 180s,” he said about the javelin, “but I got first place, so obviously I’m happy.” Faieta threw the javelin just over 168 feet, earning him first place against both the Raiders and the Rockets. Sal’s goal for the shot put was to throw about 40 feet and he met that goal plus some with a throw of 45-2, taking first against both teams.
Deshan Brown took three first places for the Bulldogs, winning the 100 (11.62) against both teams and the 200 (24.7) against Waynesburg, missing first place against the Rockets by under a second.
