J-M’s Coles strikes out nine in Class A playoff win

Jefferson-Morgan’s Kaitlyn Coles struck out nine batters Tuesday in a 1-0 win at Gateway against Elderton in a Class A playoff first round game.

The Lady Rockets’ Kirsten Stoneking was responsible for two of the team’s three hits.

“She was an important part of the win,” Jefferson-Morgan coach, Tony Barbetta, said.

Stoneking also had a key sacrifice bunt in the sixth inning, advancing Reagan Rush to third base. Rush then came home on a passed ball with the game’s only run.

“Reagan’s a very good base-runner,” Barbetta said.

Jefferson-Morgan (8-2, 16-3) advance to the quarter-finals and will play again early next week.

“It’s the first playoff game we’ve won in a longtime.”

South Side Beaver 5, West Greene 1 — The Lady Pioneers lost a Class A playoff game at Burgettstown High School falling to South Side Beaver.

The Lady Rams’ Cheyenn Seik went two-for-three and had a double, while teamate Maria Thomas has a triple.

Michele Klein also went two-for-three for South Side Beaver, she also scored.

West Greene’s Paige Moninger struck out her 400th batter in her career.

Autumn Widdup went two-for-three and had a double for the Lady Pioneers, while teammate Lauren Weaver also had a double and the lone RBI for the team.

Widdup also scored West Greene’s only run.

Belle Vernon 5, Valley 4 — Haley Bashada (16-5) struck out six in a Class AAA first round playoff game at Baldwin, defeating Valley.

Valley’s Schyler Pfeiffer and Carly Bonk each singled in the first inning. Teammate Katrina George followed with a home run to score three runs.

The Lady Leopards pushed back in the second inning, with Natalie Bashada hitting a two-run single.

Valley scored again in the bottom of the second.

Belle Vernon (8-2, 16-5) earned three more runs in the top of the seventh inning to win the game 5-4.

High school baseball

Brownsville 5, Burrell 3 — Brownsville’s Tyler Spohn struck out five on the Falcon’s way to winning a first round Class AA playoff game at Woodland Hills, defeating Burrell.

Brownsville’s Fred Heiser wetn three-for-four and had a double and an RBI.

The Falcons racked up the runs fairly quickly, two in the bottom of the first, followed by two in the second and scored their final run in the bottom of the third.

Burrell scored its three runs in the last three innings of the game, one in the fifth, sixth, and seventh.

Matt Atman had a double for Burrell.

Brownsville (10-4, 16-5) plays again tomorrow against Ellwood City at Pullman Park, Butler.

Serra Catholic 11, Carmichaels 1, 6 innings — Alain Girman held the Mikes to three hits and the Eagles made the most of nine hits, nine walks and two hit-batsmen for a Class A first-round playoff win at Chartiers Valley.

Tyler Shoaf walked three times for Carmichaels, and scored the Mikes’ lone run in the bottom of the first inning.

Serra (13-5) scored one in the top of the first, four in both the fourth and fifth innings, and two more in the sixth.

There were no extra base hits in the game.

Carmichaels finishes the season with a 10-10 record.

Shady Side Academy 4, Waynesburg Central 3 — Shady Side Academy rallied from 2-1 and 3-2 deficits with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for a Class AA first-round win at Upper St. Clair.

The Raiders (12-6) scored two in the top of the first, and Shady Side Academy (16-2) responded with one in the bottom of the inning. Both teams scored single runs in the third inning.

Ben Hartz scattered three hits, struck out 14 and walked one to earn the win. He also doubled, as did Jake Kleindl.

Alex Swauger took the loss.
