WPIAL football playoffs begin tonight
The WPIAL football playoffs kickoff tonight for five local teams, only one at the same location wher eit was originally scheduled to take place.
Hurricane Sandy dumped so much water around the area this week that the WPIAL instructed home teams with natural grass fields to find other places to play.
So while Belle Vernon (4-5) travels to Central Valley (7-2) for a Class AAA game (as scheduled), the Leopards home field will be the site of Frazier’s Class A first-round game against top-seeded Clairton.
The Commodores (7-2) hope to shock the world by beating the two-time defending PIAA champion Bears (9-0). Clairton is a couple of wins shy of the state record for consecutive wins and would establish a new mark by winning a fifth consecutive WPIAL Class A crown.
Tri-County South Conference champion Beth-Center (8-1) will play Union (6-3) on California High School’s new synthetic surface.
TCS runner-up Jefferson-Morgan (7-2) will travel to Waynesburg Central and use the Raiders’ field for its game against Neshannock (8-1).
Carmichaels (7-2) actually will travel past McKees Rocks on its way to North Hills High School to meet Sto-Rox (8-1).
All first-round WPIAL football games begin at 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Belle Vernon’s boys and girls soccer teams will vie for spots in the PIAA playoffs in Class AA consolation games.
The BVA girls take on Central Valley at noon, before the boys battle South Fayette at 2:15 p.m. Both games will be held at Chartiers Valley High School before the Class AA championship games are held later in the day.
