Belle Vernon tops AG, clinches playoff berth

Kirby Manown shot a 3-under 32 to propel Belle Vernon into the postseason by downing Albert Gallatin, 208-212 Tuesday at Duck Hollow Golf Club.

“Kirby put us on his shoulders today,” said Belle Vernon head coach Melvin Gouker. “The course record there for high school is 31 and while a 36 or 37 is a great score, today it wouldn’t have been enough to win.”

Despite the soggy conditions, both teams put up solid scores.

“Duck Hollow was in great condition,” added Gouker. “Albert Gallatin put up a fight today.”

Frank Guarinoni carded a 42 for the Leopards (9-6, 8-4), as Ben Wolfe shot a 43. Matt Suchko (44) and Jerry Popovec (47) rounded out the scoring.

Cullen Hoone paced the Colonials (8-8, 4-8) with a 36. Brandon Kenney added a 42 as Tanner Kutek and Pat McDonough each carded a 43. Ben Rozzi shot a 48.

With the win, Belle Vernon clinched a second-place tie with Uniontown and a spot in the playoffs.

“We’ll play either at Butler’s Golf Course or Hilland Golf Course, in Butler, Pa.,” added Gouker. “We’ve played at Butler’s Golf Course before, so we’re more familiar with that course.”

Jefferson-Morgan 232, Carmichaels 250 — Jake Guthrie shot a 43 as Gillian Alexander and Charles Mattish both carded 44 as the Rockets closed out the season with a win at Greene County Country Club.

Ryan Sibert added a 45 for the Rockets (7-10, 6-6) and Austin Clark shot a 56.

Justin Newman paced the Mikes (3-13, 3-9) with a 44. Jacob Wamsley shot a 48 and Brandon Wamsley added a 50. Jordan Bogucki (53) and Alex Watson (55) rounded out the scoring.

Derry Area 220, Frazier 251 — Jake Feliciani shot a 41 at Latrobe Elks Golf Course to led Derry to a non-section win.

Zack Zimmerman shot a 42 as Alex Mylant and Dan Brisi each carded a 45 each. Roby Patrick added a 49.

Josh Olbrys and Hunter Clay each shot 49 to lead Frazier (5-8, 3-8). Andrea Lash added a 50. Josh Miller (51) and J.J. Roebuck (52) closed out the scoring.

Girls volleyball

Connellsville 3, Frazier 0 — Connellsville swept Frazier in a non-section match that crossed classifications.

Connellsville (5-5) took the win with set scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-14.

McKenzie Barch led the Lady Commodores (7-2, 7-0) with seven service points. Cassidy Guiser added five kills and Jamie Muccioli had six service points.

Frazier returns to section play Thursday, hosting Carmichaels.

Uniontown 3, Washington 0 — Tori Burgess powered Uniontown to a Section 4-AA win with 16 assists.

The Lady Raiders (6-0, 6-0) won with set scores of 25-15, 25-21 and 25-10. Hanna Wagner had seven kills and Bella Baker added nine digs. Kalee Swaney had six aces.

Uniontown faces Southmoreland today and travels to McGuffey Thursday for a section match.

Trinity 3, Albert Gallatin 0 — Trinity downed Albert Gallatin with a 25-16, 25-10, 25-14, Section 2-AAA win.

Jessica Dains had 12 assists and 10 digs for the Lady Colonials (2-11, 0-8). Courtney Hains added five kills and four digs as Kara Zimcosky had five digs and three kills. Kristin Sroka had five digs.

Jefferson-Morgan 3, West Greene 2 — Jefferson-Morgan needed all five sets to squeak by Section 5-A rival West Greene at Pioneer Gym.

The Lady Rockets won with the first match, 25-19, but then returned the favor as West Greene took the second match by the same score. Jefferson-Morgan won the third set, 25-20, but the Lady Pioneers (1-8, 1-7) won the fourth set, 26-24.

Jefferson-Morgan (4-3, 4-3) took the final set, 15-13. Kirsten Stoneking had 16 digs, three aces and two kills as Morgan Simkovic added nine kills, three aces and three blocks. Alexis Starostanko had 10 kills, seven digs and an ace.

Bailey Bennington led West Greene with nine kills, six blocks and six digs. Emily Engle-Young had 12 aces and 10 assists. Lauren Mason added eight kills and Madison Raber had six digs.

West Greene travels to California tonight, who defeated Mapletown 3-0 (25-7, 25-11, 25-10) Tuesday.

Laurel Highlands 3, Latrobe 2 — Marissa Erminio had 24 kills and seven digs as Laurel Highlands took home a 22-25, 25-19, 9-25, 25-23, 15-10 win against Section 1-AAA foe Latrobe.

Kendall Erminio added 10 digs and a pair of aces for the Fillies. Kristina Hudock notched seven digs and five blocks as Haley Moreland doled out 36 assists.

Boys soccer

Brownsville 3, Uniontown 0 — Matt Watson and Zach Ruffcorn both scored in the first half to lead Brownsville to a 6-AA win over Uniontown.

Brandon Bailey added an insurance goal in the second half for the Falcons.

Brownsville plays McGuffey Thursday.

Laurel Highlands 1, Baldwin 0 — Drew DeBerry scored the lone goal, unassisted, to lead Laurel Highlands to a non-section win.

The goal was DeBerry’s 17th of the season and was scored in the 18th minute.

The Mustangs (5-4-1, 4-4) host Charleroi Thursday in a section game.

Girls cross country

Uniontown 21, Ringgold 38; Uniontown 18, Elizabeth-Forward 43; Ringgold 21, Elizabeth-Forward 40 — The Lady Raiders’ Julie Friend not only finished first in the Section 2-AAA triangular held at Mingo Park, but was 10th overall in the combined finish.

Friend’s winning time was 19:41. Teammate Julie Gerber was third in a time of 21:00. Jade Bellotti (5, 22:25), Rachel Diamond (7, 22:41), and Paige Tibbe (8, 22:50) also had top-10 finishes.

Uniontown improves to 6-0 in the section and 8-0 overall. The Lady Raiders close the section season Monday afternoon when they host Connellsville and Laurel Highlands.

Burgettstown 21, Washington 34; Burgettstown 15, Frazier 50; Washington 15, Frazier 50 — The Lady Blue Devils swept the first three places in the Section 3-AA triangular hosted by Frazier at Sampey Park.

Burgettstown’s Cheyenne Blach finished first in 24:27.

Frazier’s Amber Starr was sixth with a time of 28:34. Christina Babyak and Chelsea Klem were next to the finish line, both completing the course in 29:42.

Frazier slides to 0-6 in the section and 0-9 overall.

Waynesburg Central 17, Avella 39; Waynesburg Central 23, Brownsville 32; Brownsville 18, Avella 37 — The Lady Raiders had three finishers in the top four spots to sweep a Section 3-AA meet at Brownsville’s Patsy Hillman Park.

Waynesburg’s Danielle Jacobs finished first in 23:05. The Lady Falcons’ Kara Rohlf was second in 24:08. The Lady Raiders’ Ally Younken (25:48) and Lindsee Zimmer (26:34) were next to the finish line, and Brownsville’s Tabby Ziglear rounded out the top five in 26:51.

The Lady Raiders’ Richelle Tharp (7, 28:43) and Mikaylin Shields (10, 31:30), and Brownsville’s Carmen Peton (8, 28:55) and Evan Peffer (9, 31:00) all had top-10 finishes.

Brownsville evens its mark at 3-3 in the section and 4-4 overall.

Boys cross country

Uniontown 22, Ringgold 36; Uniontown 15, Elizabeth-Forward 50; Ringgold 16, Elizabeth-Forward 46 — The Red Raiders’ Brady Guthrie finished first in 17:49, and teammate Nate Edenfield came across the finish line 14 seconds later to lead Uniontown to a Section 2-AAA triangular sweep at Mingo Park.

Paul Klatt (4, 18:42), Jake Cahn (7, 19:08), Justin Hostetler (8, 19:23), and Patrick Hager (9, 19:29) all had top-10 finishes.

Uniontown (6-0, 8-0) closes the section schedule Monday afternoon when the Red Raiders host Connellsville and Laurel Highlands.

Burgettstown 19, Washington 36; Burgettstown 18, Frazier 37; Frazier 24, Washington 31 — The Commodores fought for a split of the Section 3-AA triangular competed on their home course at Sampey Park.

Cory Krall was the first runner to finish for Frazier (4-2, 6-3) in fourth place with a time of 19:02. Christian Katic (9, 19:48) and Ian Barotta (10, 20:52) also had top-10 finishes for the Commodores.

Waynesburg Central 27, Avella 30; Waynesburg Central 21, Brownsville 34; Avella 18, Brownsville 41 — The Raiders clinched the Section 3-AA triangular at Patsy Hillman Park by taking the first three spots.

Sean Hilverding finished first with the winning time of 17:53. Drew McConville was second in 20:17, and Anthony Morrow was third in 21:25.

Craig Silbaugh was the lone top-10 finisher for Brownsville (0-6, 0-8) with a sixth-place finish in 22:20.

Women’s soccer

Waynesburg 2, Thiel 0 — Waynesburg improved to 2-0 in PAC play with a shutout at Thiel.

The teams battled through the rain, deadlocked at 0-0 through most of the half, until Emily Mullady scored an unassisted goal to give the Yellow Jackets (6-5, 2-0) a 1-0 lead at the half.

Thiel (3-6-1, 0-2) out shot Waynesburg 5-4 in the second half, but the Yellow Jackets added an insurance goal when Taylor Augustine found the back of the net off a pass from Susie Goodwin.

Ciara Scott earned her second shutout in a row, making three saves in the process.

Washington & Jefferson 2, Westminster 2, OT — Southmoreland graduate Holly Shipley started the Presidents’ comeback from a 2-0 deficit by scoring her 12th goal of the season with seven minutes remaining in the first half.

Teammate Dawn Murphy pulled the Presidents (5-4-1, 1-0-1) even with the Lady Titans (4-5-3, 0-1-1) less than two minutes later with her sixth goal of the year.

Despite a 20-7 shot advantage, the Presidents could not beat Jenn Cantella, who had seven saves.

Mattie Follen made one save for Washington & Jefferson.
