Lady Commodores remain unbeaten in Section 5-A play
The Frazier girls volleyball team kept rolling along Tuesday evening, defeating Mapletown in straight sets to remain unbeaten in Section 5-A action.
The Lady Commodores won by the scores 25-9, 25-10, 25-15. Frazier improves to 9-0 in the section and 9-2 overall, while the Lady Maples slide to 0-10 in the section and 0-14 overall.
Alena Blaszczak led Frazier with 12 service points, and Erica Harvey added nine more.
Rachael Buchtan had three digs for Mapletown, and Julie Minnick added three digs.
Geibel Catholic 3, West Greene 0 — The Lady Gators made the long road trip to Rogersville worth the effort, returning home with a Section 5-A straight sets victory over the Lady Pioneers.
Geibel (7-3, 7-4) won by the scores 25-15, 25-16, 25-5. Emily Costantino had a strong effort at the net with seven kills. Rachel Elias finished with six kills.
California 3, Jefferson-Morgan 1 — The Lady Rockets won the first set, 27-25, but the Lady Trojans stormed back in the next three for a Section 5-A road victory.
California won the final three sets, 25-10, 25-15, 25-17.
Ashley Faddis had a double-double for Jefferson-Morgan (5-4, 6-4) with 13 digs and 11 assists. Kirsten Stoneking had 18 digs and two kills in the loss. Alexis Stoneking finished with four digs and four kills, and Morgan Simkovic added three kills.
Uniontown 3, Charleroi 0 — The Red Raiders kept doing what they’ve been doing in Section 5-AA, defeating the Lady Cougars in three sets for a road victory.
Uniontown (8-0, 9-0) defeated Charleroi 25-20, 25-14, 25-9.
Tori Burgess had a nice all-around effort for the Lady Raiders with 18 assists and five digs. Nicole Bell had a strong defensive effort with five blocks and five kills.
Brownsville 3, Washington 2 — The Lady Falcons fell behind 2-1, but won the final two sets for a Section 5-AA home victory.
Brownsville (6-2, 10-3) won the first set, 25-22, but lost the next two, 25-23, 25-21. The Lady Falcons tied the match by winning the fourth set, 25-14, and capped the come-from-behind victory by taking the fifth set, 15-12.
Maris Seto controlled the offense with 19 assists. Franchesca Legros had a nice all-around effort with 20 service points, eight aces and eight kills. Whitney Ptak had a strong performance at the net with 12 kills.
Canon-McMillan 3, Albert Gallatin 0 — The Lady Colonials dropped a Section 2-AAA match at home, losing 25-18, 25-14, 25-15.
Jessica Dains led Albert Gallatin (0-10, 2-13) with nine assists, six digs and six kills. Kaley Rankin finished with 10 digs and three aces. Hannah Darcy had five digs, and Courtney Haines had five kills.
Boys soccer
Beth-Center 2, Geibel Catholic 1, OT — The Gators’ playoff hopes took a hit with a Section 4-A loss to the visiting Bulldogs.
Geibel is now 4-6-1 in the section and 5-6-2 overall. Beth-Center already has secured a playoff berth and improves to 8-3-0 in the section and 9-5-0 overall.
In other boys soccer action, South Park defeated Belle Vernon, 3-0, McGuffey downed Brownsville, 10-2, Waynesburg Central blanked Uniontown, 5-0, and California lost to Bentworth, 3-0.
Girls cross country
Brownsville 26, Washington 29; Brownsville 15, Fort Cherry 50; Washington 15, Fort Cherry 50 — For whatever reason, the Fort Cherry girls didn’t show up at the Section 3-AA triangular at Washington, so the Lady Falcons came away with a sweep after edging the home squad.
Kara Rohlf led the charge home for Brownsville, finishing first with a time of 22:37. Tabby Ziglear was fourth in 25:17, and teammate Carmen Peton was sixth in 26:44. Evan Peffer was the eighth girl to finish, with a time of 27:54, and Katlyn Victor rounded out the top-10 finishes in 30:10.
California’s Katelyn Turner ran unattached, finishing fifth overall with a time of 26:40.
Brownsville finishes with a 5-3 section record and an overall record of 5-5. The Lady Falcons return to action Thursday in the annual FCCA Championships at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus.
Ringgold 24, Albert Gallatin 32; Albert Gallatin 15, McKeesport 50; Ringgold 15, McKeesport 50 — The Lady Colonials closed the regular season with a split of the Section 2-AAA triangular meet at Albert Gallatin.
Ringgold’s Kirsten McMichael finished first with a time 20:30. Albert Gallatin’s Hannah Abraham was second in 22:08, 19 seconds ahead of teammate Liz Trump. Kaitlyn Smearcheck was seventh with a time of 23:59, and Kaitlyn Podloger was ninth in a time of 24:51. Albert Gallatin closes the season with a 3-5 section record.
Avella 15, Frazier 50; Chartiers-Houston 15, Frazier 50; Chartiers-Houston 29, Avella 29 (Chartiers-Houston wins tiebreaker) — All three Lady Commodores finished in the top 10 in the final Section 3-AA triangular of the season, led by Amber Starr in second place with a time of 28:24.
Chelsie Klem was fifth and Christine Babyak sixth, both finishing in 30:09.
Boys cross country
Fort Cherry 28, Washington 29; Washington 20, Brownsville 25; Fort Cherry 17, Brownsville 44 — Craig Silbaugh finished seventh for the Falcons with a time of 21:08, but it wasn’t enough as Brownsville dropped both ends of a Section 3-AA triangular at Washington.
Brownsville finishes the regular season 0-8 in the section and 0-10 overall. The Falcons return to action Thursday at the FCCA Championships hosted by Uniontown at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus.
Brandon Myrga (12, 22:40), Christian Sesek (14, 23:12), Brad Beatty (17, 24:19), and Harry Hiles (19, 24:47) also figured into the final scoring for Brownsville.
Ringgold 16, Albert Gallatin 47; McKeesport 18, Albert Gallatin 40; Ringgold 23, McKeesport 38 — Tom McKnight was the lone Colonial to place in the top 10, finishing eighth on his home course with a time of 19:46 in the closing Section 2-AAA triangular meet.
Luke Diamond was 15th with a time of 21:25. Austin Martin (18, 22:05), Kody Valentine (19, 22:19), and Brian McKnight (21, 23:08) rounding out the scoring runs for the Colonials.
Albert Gallatin finishes the regular season with an 0-8 section record.
Frazier 19, Avella 36; Chartiers-Houston 25, Frazier 32; Chartiers-Houston 18, Avella 41 — The Commodores split the final Section 3-AA triangular meet of the season on the road at Avella.
Frazier finishes with a 5-3 section record and 7-4 overall mark.
The Commodores’ Cory Krall was second with a time of 19:41, just five seconds off the winning time. Christian Katic was fifth in 20:44. Ryan Maurer finished sixth in 21:07, three seconds ahead of teammate Ian Barota. Tanner Murt rounded out the scoring runs, finishing 16th in 24:46.
Men’s soccer
California (Pa.) 5, Bloomsburg 0 — The Vulcans won their sixth straight match with five different players scoring goals.
California improves to 3-2 in the conference and 8-5 overall. Bloomsburg goes to 1-3-1 in the conference and 6-6-1 overall. The Vulcans host East Stroudsburg Saturday at noon.
Tyler Woolum and Brad Colvin scored in the first half, and Kevin Helbig, Jeffrey Kyei and Anthony DiFrancesco netted goals in the second half.
Vulcan goalkeeper Mitch Mack had his second-straight shutout.
Waynesburg 2, Saint Vincent 1, OT — The Yellow Jackets rallied to tie the PAC match late in the second half, and then James Sneed scored the game-winning goal in overtime.
Saint Vincent (0-4-0, 5-8-1) scored in the 68th minute of play, but Cody Lemke scored with less than a minute to play to force overtime.
Brandon Daughtry made seven saves for the Yellow Jackets.
Waynesburg improves to 1-1-1 in the conference and 6-5-1 overall.
Women’s soccer
California (Pa.) 4, Bloomsburg 0 — Chelsea Crockett and Kelsey Russo both had a goal and an assist to help the Vulcans, ranked 15th in Division II, to a home victory over the Huskies.
California improves to 7-1-1 in the conference and 10-2-1 overall. The victory extends the Vulcans’ home unbeaten streak to 24 matches (23-0-1).
Bloomsburg slips to 2-6-1 in the conference and 4-7-1 overall.
The match was scoreless in the first half with Bloomsburg fielding only 10 players over the last 11 minutes after a red card ejection.
Jordan Gray opened the scoring in the second half. Russo scored the second goal off assists from Crockett and Bethany Smyda. Crockett scored an unassisted goal, and Kara Novotny capped the scoring from a Russo pass.
Belle Vernon graduate Ashley Magruda recorded her sixth shutout, turning aside two shots.
The Vulcans are on the road Saturday, traveling to East Stroudsburg.
Women’s tennis
Waynesburg 8, Thiel 1 — The Yellow Jackets swept the three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches for a PAC home victory over the Tomcats.
Waynesburg improves to 3-4 in the conference and 5-7 overall. Thiel slides to 1-7 in the conference and 2-14 overall.
Women’s volleyball
Westminster 3, Bethany (W.Va.) 0 — The Titans avenged an earlier loss, defeating the Bison on the road for a PAC victory.
Bethany is now 9-2 in the conference and 20-5 overall, while Westminster improves to 8-4 in the PAC and 18-7 overall.
Laurel Highlands graduate Jessica Zavatchen led the Bison with 35 assists. She also had eight digs.
