Lady Pioneers defeat Mapletown, 3-1

Mapletown won the first set Wednesday night, but West Greene stormed back to win the next three sets for a Section 5-A win.

The Lady Maples opened with a 25-12 victory. The Lady Pioneers won the match by the scores 25-14, 25-22 and 25-15.

Abby Shipley had three digs for Mapletown (0-12, 0-14), and Sarah Ferrier finished with two. Tiffany Yelenik had two kills.

Boys cross country

University High (W.Va.) 17, Albert Gallatin 46 — With the West Virginia regional today, the home squad rested its top seven runners in a non-section victory over the visiting Colonials.

James Barnett completed his home course in 18:43 for first place. Teammate Cody Moser was seven seconds behind in second place, and Jacob Hough was third in 19:37.

Tom McKnight was the first Colonial to finish, placing fourth with a time of 19:39.

Albert Gallatin’s Austin Murphy was ninth in 22:06, Kody Valentine finished 10th in 22:58, and Brian McKnight was 12th in 24:02. Jacob Layton rounded out the scoring runs in 13th place with a time of 24:55.

Neither team had a full girls squad compete. The Lady Colonials’ Liz Trump finished first in 23:26. Kaitlyn Smearcheck finished in 24:15, one second ahead of teammate Kaitlyn Podlogar. Tara Moore completed the course in 27:24.
