Brentwood beats California
Five football teams from the area have qualified for the WPIAL playoffs and will learn their seedings and first-round opponents Monday night.
Beth-Center and Jefferson-Morgan earned home games, while Carmichaels, Frazier and Belle Vernon open the playoffs on the road.
Altoona 27, Connellsville 12
Jimmy Cellurale scored all of Connellsville’s points, but they came after the home team had built a 27-0 lead.
Cellurale scored on a 3-yard run, then scampered 27 yards with a fumble recovery for the Falcons (2-7, 2-6). Connellsville quarterback Jade Maher completed 11 of 17 passes for 100 yards.
Mante Barnes scored two rushing touchdowns for Altoona, which clinched a wildcard playoff berth out of the Quad East Conference with the win. Quarterback Brennan Luciano completed 16 of 27 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns for the winners.
Charleroi 35, Brownsville 7
The Cougars got three short touchdown runs from Brandon Bowman and 176 passing yards and two touchdowns on only four completions from quarterback Matt Carr to beat the Falcons.
Brownsville (0-9, 0-8) scored on a 57-yard run by Marcellus Grooms to avoid the shutout in the Interstate Conference finale for both teams.
Yough 35, Southmoreland 14
— After spotting the Cougars a 21-0 lead, Southmoreland stormed back with a pair of second-quarter touchdowns to cut Yough’s lead to 21-14.
But Yough scored again before halftime and once more in the fourth quarter to seal this Interstate Conference win.
Scoring for Southmoreland (3-6, 3-5) were Justin Livingood on an 18-yard scoring pass from Tyler Ramsey and Jake Pisula on a 17-yard run.
Washington 69, Waynesburg Central 6
The Little Prexies got 324 yards rushing and six touchdowns on 11 carries from Shai McKenzie to beat the Raiders in the Interstate Conference.
McKenzie opened the scoring with an 80-yard TD run. The Raiders (1-8, 1-7) were moving for a tying score, but Josh Wise intercepted a pass and returned it 98 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead. McKenzie scored the next five touchdowns for Washington to make it 47-0.
Waynesburg got on the board when John Glen Davis caught a touchdown pass from Bo Hampson.
Beth-Center 58, Vincentian 0
Gino Faieta completed six of seven passes for 137 yards and three touchdowns and Cody Durant scored three touchdowns as the Bulldogs (8-1, 7-1) for ready for the playoffs with a non-conference win over Vincentian.
Faieta passed to Matt Riggle for a 38-yard touchdown to open the scoring before Durant ripped off a 24 yard TD run and followed it with a 72-yard punt return.
Faieta passed for a 53-yard score to Jason Stay before Durant added a 30-yard run. All of those scores came in the first quarter.
Brentwood 61, California 19
California ended its football season at 2-7 after dropping a 61-19 game at Brentwood.
The Trojans gave up 34 points in the first quarter before Corey Adams got them on the board with a 36-yard run midway through the second quarter.
Three more Brentwood scores preceded California’s second touchdown, a 7-yard pass from Austin Hunter to Bobby Calbaugh. Patrick Short added the last touchdown for the Trojans on a 10-yard run in the game’s last minute.
Brentwood got 169 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries from Justin Vickless.
