Fillies finished second in Gateway Invitational

The Laurel Highlands girls opened the 2012 cross country season Saturday morning with a second-place finish in the Gateway Invitational held at Boyce Park.

The Fillies had four girls in the top 20, including Marisa Deichert (4, 21:24), Mariah Custer (10, 21:52), Elli Monaghan (11, 21:54), and Melissa McCann (15, 22:59). Bristyn Yanick (27, 23:48), Emily Rice (33, 24:02), and Gianna Mollica (62, 25:35) rounded out the finishers for Laurel Highlands.

The Hempfield girls, led by Morgan Ansell, won the team title with 64 points. Laurel Highlands was a close second with 67 points.

Cal U/Marty Uher Invitational — Uniontown’s Julie Gerber finished ninth in 21:56, leading the Lady Raiders to fourth place. Rachel Diamond (19, 22:56), Jade Belliotti (24, 23:21), Page Tibbe (26, 23:33), and Katie Burgess (36, 24:39) also factored in the team scoring.

Albert Gallatin and Brownsville also competed, but did not field complete teams. The Lady Falcons’ Kara Rohlf was 38th in a time of 24:42. Liz Trump was the first Lady Colonial to finish, placing 44th overall with a time of 25:18. Kaitlyn Smearcheck (45, 25:22), Kaitlyn Podlogar (75, 28:15), and Tara Moore (84, 29:41) also ran for Albert Gallatin.

Boys cross country

Gateway Invitational — The Mustangs’ Adam Ennis slipped inside the top 20, finishing 19th with a time of 18:49 to lead Laurel Highlands to ninth place in the team standings.

Michael Cecchini (28, 19:15), Justin Kostelnik (30, 19:27), Steve Salanick (59, 20:29), Ryan Teets (61, 20:34), Greg Maruca (63, 20:36), and Josh Chisler (79, 21:35) also completed the Boyce Park course on a warm, muggy morning.

Baldwin won the team title, edging Fox Chapel.

Cal U/Marty Uher Invitational — Uniontown’s Brady Guthrie led the local contingent home with a sixth-place finish in 17:33, helping the Red Raiders to seventh place in the team standings.

Also counting in the Uniontown team total were Paul Klatt (26, 19:18), Anthony Lacunza (49, 20:28), Patrick Hager (51, 20:39), and Justin Hostetler (55, 21:01).

Frazier finished ninth in the team standings, with Cory Krall leading the Commodores home in 27th place with a time of 19:19. Christian Katic (57, 21:14), Ryan Maurer (60, 22:03), Ian Barota (66, 23:30), and Tanner Murt (68, 25:01) also factored in the scoring.

Albert Gallatin was the 10th-place team. Thomas McKnight was 44th with a time of 20:12. Willie Valentine (59, 21:44), Austin Martin (63, 23:13), Kody Valentine (65, 23:23), and Brian McKnight (71, 25:51) rounded out the scoring runs for the Colonials.

Mt. Lebanon easily won the team title with 37 points.

Boys soccer

FCCA Tournament — Connellsville emerged from the season-opening tournament undefeated with a 3-2 overtime victory over Geibel Catholic and a 1-0 win over Bentworth.

The Bearcats earned a split with a 7-0 win over Albert Gallatin, as did the Gators with a 3-1 win against Uniontown. Brownsville handed the Colonials a 5-2 loss.

Girls soccer

FCCA Tournament — Laurel Highlands came away from the season-opening tournament with a pair of victories after beating Uniontown, 7-0, and Trinity Christian (W.Va.), 7-1.

Bentworth downed Albert Gallatin, 4-1, and Connellsville edged Bentworth, 5-4. The Uniontown-Connellsville match was originally delayed by lightning, and eventually postponed because of the weather.

Girls volleyball

FCCA Tournament — Laurel Highlands edged Connellsville, 25-23, in the title match at Laurel Highlands.

College football

Waynesburg 34, Muskingum (Ohio) 23 — The Muskies led 23-14 heading into the fourth quarter, but the visiting Yellow Jackets scored 20 points in the final quarter for a non-conference victory.

Waynesburg scored first when Beth-Center graduate Dominic Moore powered into the end zone from one yard early in the first quarter.

Muskingum scored the next 17 points, but the Yellow Jackets ended the string when Tyler Fatigante scored from a yard out. However, Andrew Davis returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown.

Waynesburg stormed back in the final quarter, starting with Moore’s second touchdown run of two yards with 10:13 remaining. Bertrand Ngampa sprinted 40 yards into the end zone with 4:08 left. Alex Henry capped the rally with a pair of field goals, good from 39 yards at 2:03 and from 23 yards with just 35 seconds remaining.

Ngampa led Waynesburg with 92 yards rushing with Fatigante adding 80 yards on the ground.

Women’s volleyball

Rollins (Fla.) Invitational — California (Pa.) split Saturday’s matches after sweeping both on the opening day of the tournament on Friday.

The Vulcans (3-1) defeated Minnesota State-Moorhead, 3-0 (25-23, 27-25, 25-20), but lost to No. 19 Eckerd (Fla.) in the opening match, 3-1 (13-25, 27-25, 25-19, 30-28).

Kelly Fromknecht had a triple-double in the loss with 11 kills, 28 assists and 11 digs. Abbey Freund finished with a team-leading 33 assists, and Molly Delaney had 18 digs.

Brandy Harris had 24 kills in the loss to Eckerd, and came back in the afternoon match with 12. Fromknecht had 25 assists in the second math, and Freund added 19 assists and 13 digs.

The Vulcans opened the tournament with a pair of 3-0 victories, defeating Pace (N.Y.), 25-18, 25-14, 25-14, and host Rollins, 25-11, 25-14, 25-17.

Women’s soccer

California (Pa.) 6, Charleston (W.Va.) 0 — The Vulcans scored four goals in the second half on their way to a non-conference victory over visiting Charleston.

Chelsea Crockett and Janelle McCann both netted a pair of goals in the victory. Haley Henderson came off the bench to score the other two goals for the Vulcans.

Goalkeeper Ashley Magruda turned aside the lone shot she faced.

Women’s soccer

Waynesburg 6, Franciscan 1 – Taylor Augustine, Natalie Abraham, Karen Moyer, and Missy Coleman scored first half goals Friday to lead the Yellow Jackets to a season-opening non-conference home victory.

Augustine and Abraham also scored goals in the second half.

Freshman keeper Ciara Scott made two saves after allowing a goal in the first half.

Men’s soccer

Waynesburg 5, Franciscan 0 – The men made it a sweep Friday with four goals in the second half to open the season with a non-conference home victory.

Ray Melone opened the scoring in with an unassisted goal. He scored his second goal at 4:47 in the second half. Victor Browne, Juan Angel and Cody Lemke added goals in the second half.

Brandon Daughtry stopped five shots to preserve the shutout.

Women’s volleyball

River City Tournament – Waynesburg split the season-opening tournament hosted by Marietta College, losing to Bluffton (Ohio), 3-0 (25-20, 25-6, 25-19), and defeating Ohio Valley, 3-2 (25-17, 25-21, 26-28, 21-25, 15-12).Women’s tennis

Waynesburg 5, La Roche 4 – Rachel Klemash won her singles match and the Yellow Jackets won 2-of-3 doubles matches to open the season with a non-conference victory.

Klemash teamed with Alyssa Daniel to win at first doubles. Lauren Cowden and Ellen Limback won their No. 3 doubles match. Limback won her match at No. 2 singles. Sarah Reyes clinched the match for the visitors with her win at No. 4 singles.

Girls golf

Southmoreland 214, Kittanning 233 — Zoe Ripple (46) and Maddy Nelson (49) were the only two under 50 for the Lady Scots in Friday’s match at Timber Ridge Golf Course.

Brandi Streightif had the low round for Kittanning with a 56.

Kittanning slips to 1-3, while Southmoreland improves to 3-1.

Girls golf

Southmoreland 213, St. Joseph’s 276 — Kelsey Shirer and Zoe Ripple earned co-medalist honors by shooting 51 as the Lady Scots beat St. Joseph’s in Division II, Section 1 play Thursday.

Maddy Nelson (53), Taylor Conn (58) and Nadine Matthews (59) rounded out the scoring for the Lady Scots (2-1).

Samantha Stefanik led St. Joseph’s with a 64.

Boys golf

Frazier 228, Brownsville 285 — Four players shot in the 40s as Frazier downed Brownsville in non-section play at Linden Hall Golf Course.

Josh Miller and Hunter Clay each carded 42 to pace the Commordores (3-3, 1-3). Andrea Lash (43), Josh Olbrys (45) and Annika Erdely (51) rounded out the scoring.

Derek Lent paced the Falcons (0-6, 0-5) with a 48. Mike Anderson shot a 58 as Danny Mullen and George Kubacki added a 59 each. Brad Britvich rounded out the scoring with a 61.
