Mustangs move one match closer section title
Belle Vernon’s Kirby Manown was medalist at Willowbrook Golf Course Thursday afternoon with a 3-under 33, but three Mustangs finished at 40 or better to lead visiting Laurel Highlands to a 200-205 Division I, Section 2 victory.
Laurel Highlands improves to 8-0 in the section and 10-0 overall, and is one win away from clinching a playoff berth. Belle Vernon slips to 5-4 in the section and 6-6 overall.
Harison Laskey and Brandon Yuhaniak shared low honors for the Mustangs with a 2-over 38. Jericho Swimmer finished with a 40, and Nick Ezzi carded a 41. Jeremy Guzy closed the scoring with a 43.
Frank Guarinoni and Ben Wolfe both shot 41 for the Leopards, and Dom Francia and Matt Suchko both finished with 45.
Elizabeth-Forward 197, Connellsville 229 — The Warriors kept their Division I, Section 2 playoff hopes alive with a victory over the visiting Falcons at Butler’s Golf Course.
Elizabeth-Forward improves to 5-3 in the section and 8-3 overall, while the Falcons slip to 2-6 in the section and 2-8 overall.
The Warriors’ Mike Ragan and Brendon Delbianco shared medalist honors with a 2-over 38. Mark Simon and Shane Reitz both shot 40, and Troy Maley finished with a 41.
Colt Miller was low man for Connellsville with a 44. Jonathan Grinko and Tyler McFadden both finished wtih 45. Hunter Detwiler carded a 46, and Ryan Burkholder added a 49.
Yough 209, Geibel Catholic 228 — Alex Patricio shot a 3-over 37 to lead Yough to a Division II, Section 2 win.
Corey Cook and Tucker Slatosky each carded 42 for Yough as Hunter Mains added a 43 and Kirk Brown shot a 45.
Ryan Robson paced the Gators (2-8, 1-7) with a 38 and Ibrahim Shahktih added a 39. Ray Paris shot a 48 as Matt Emerson carded a 51. Zach Chester (52) rounded out the scoring.
Geibel returns to action Tuesday in the WPIAL Sectional Tournament at Norvelt.
Frazier 243, Jeannette 275 — Frazier picked up its third win in Division II, Section 2 and evened its overall record with a win over Jeannette at Linden Hall Golf Course.
Josh Olbrys led all golfers with a 3-over 39 and Commodore (5-5, 3-5) teammate Hunter Clay shot a 49. Jake Koltiska (57), Annika Erdely (51) and Josh Miller (47) rounded out the scoring.
Jerrod Wolfe and Jordan Walensko led Jeannette (1-7, 0-6), each shooting 50. Kris Moffa added a 54 and Colton Gnesda shot a 58. Brad Wallace rounded out scoring with a 63.
Boys soccer
Uniontown 3, Brownsville 2 — Uniontown jumped out to a 2-0 lead by halftime and added an insurance goal before Brownsville closed the gap in their Section 6-AA battle.
Colton Layhue and Tyler Conway scored in the first half for the Raiders and Logan Phillips assisted on Hunter Phelon’s second half goal.
Matt Watson scored both of Brownsville’s goals as the Falcons registered 16 shots on goal. Carter Waligura made 14 saves.
Uniontown had eight shots on goal.
Trinity 9, Albert Gallatin 1 — Hunter Barber scored the lone Colonial goal as Albert Gallatin fell to Section 4-AAA opponent Trinity.
Barber’s goal came in the first half, on the only shot on goal for the game. Cody Riggin made 21 saves in the loss.
Albert Gallatin plays California on Monday.
Girls volleyball
Frazier 3, Mapletown 0 — Miranda Shepler led Frazier with nine service points as the Lady Commodores (3-1, 3-0) downed Mapletown in straight sets, 25-12, 25-10, 25-8 in a Section 5-A match.
Mapletown falls to 0-6 overall, 0-4 in the section.
McKenzie Barch had eight service points and Erica Harvey added seven. Frazier travels to West Greene Tuesday.
Geibel Catholic 3, West Greene 0 — Haley Solan spread the wealth, dishing out 23 assists as the Lady Gators beat West Greene in straight sets in Section 5-A play.
The Lady Gators (3-1, 3-1) won with set scores of 25-6, 25-7 and 25-16. Rachel Elias had 12 kills and Kaitlin McIntyre had nine aces.
Madison Raber led the Lady Pioneers (0-3, 0-3) with nine digs and seven aces. Emily Engle-Young also had nine digs as Bailey Bennington added four blocks. Katie Finnegan handed out six assists and Alyssa Raber had five kills.
West Greene hosts Hundred (W.Va.) on Monday.
Brownsville 3, Waynesburg Central 0 — Brownsville won in straight sets over Waynesburg, but the last set was hard-fought.
Brownsville (2-1, 2-0) won with scores of 25-11, 25-14 and 26-24. Maris Seto led the way with 12 assists, 10 service points and three blocks. Whitney Ptak had 12 service points and 10 kills as Asya Settles added 10 service points and three blocks.
Brownsville travels to Albert Gallatin on Monday.
Uniontown 3, McGuffey 0 — Tori Burgess doled out 15 assists as Uniontown won against Section 5-AA foe McGuffey in straight sets.
Tori Campbell had six aces and four kills for the Lady Raiders (2-0, 2-0) as Jessy Madison had four kills.
Uniontown hosts Charleroi on Tuesday.
