Lady Roaring Lions defeat visiting Point Park, 3-1
The Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus women’s volleyball team won its second match in as many nights Thursday, defeating visiting Point Park, 3-1, for a non-conference victory.
The Lady Roaring Lions (9-5) won the first set, 31-29, dropped the second, 25-23, and won the final two, 25-23, 25-21.
Janelle Cooper had a nice all-around effort for Penn State Fayette (9-5) with 10 kills and six digs. Leah Ambrosini finished with a team-high 16 kills, and Emily Konter controlled the offense with 34 assists.
Penn State Fayette opened the PSUAC schedule Wednesday with a 3-0 victory over Penn State-Greater Allegheny, winning by the scores 25-6, 25-9, 25-10.
Bethany (W.Va.) 3, Carlow 0 — Laurel Highands graduate Jessica Zavatchen reached another career milestone when she recorded her 1,000th career dig in the Bison’s straight-sets home victory.
Zavatchen finished with 10 digs, as well as a team-high 38 assists for her fifth double-double of the season.
Boys soccer
Laurel Highlands 4, Southmoreland 0 — The Mustangs defeated the visiting Scotties for a Section 6-AA victory.
Laurel Highlands and Southmoreland are both 2-3-0 in the section, while the Mustangs improve to 3-5-1 overall and the Scotties slip to 2-4-0.
McKeesport 1, Albert Gallatin 0 — The visiting Tigers broke the scoreless tie late in the second half for a Section 4-AAA victory.
Albert Gallatin had a good shot to tie the game a couple minutes later, but the scoring opportunity was turned aside.
Albert Gallatin goaltender Cody Riggin kept the match close with four saves.
The Colonials are now 1-4-0 in the section as well as overall.
Girls volleyball
Carmichaels 3, West Greene 0 — The Lady Mikes swept past visiting West Greene for a Section 5-A victory. Carmichaels won by the scores 25-10, 25-15, 25-17.
Hannah Cutwright finished with a team-high 18 service points for Carmichaels (2-3, 3-4), and Rachael Hathaway finished with 10 service points. Maria Stuvek had four kills.
California 3, Geibel Catholic 2 — The Lady Gators tied the Section 5-A match by winning the third and fourth sets, but the visiting Lady Trojans rallied in the fifth set, 15-12, to remain unbeaten in the section.
California won the first two sets, 26-24, 25-21, but Geibel took the next two, 25-15, 15-13.
The Lady Trojans (5-0, 6-1) received strong play at the net from Kelsey Tyler (15 kills), Paige Petrucci (15 kills), Rachel Ferry (11 kills), and Kailyn Clancy (9 kills). Clancy also finished with 10 digs and six aces. Emily Sabo (18 digs) and Danielle McBurnie (13 digs) had strong defensive efforts, and Katarina Pankratz finished with a team-high 24 assists.
Haley Solan controlled the offense for Geibel (4-2, 4-2) with 21 assists. Rachel Elias had 12 kills, and Emily Costantino added eight kills. Peyton McIntyre finished with nine aces.
Laurel Highlands 3, Franklin Regional 0 — The Fillies handled visiting Franklin Regional in three sets for a Section 1-AAA home victory. Laurel Highlands won by the scores 25-16, 25-18, 25-18.
Marissa Erminio had a nice all-around effort for Laurel Highlands (2-4, 3-8) with 14 kills, six blocks and six digs. Haley Moreland dished out 17 assists. Kristina Hudock finished with three aces, six kills and five digs. Breanna Mehall had seven blocks, and Kendall Kephart finished with five digs.
Brownsville 3, Charleroi 0 — The Lady Falcons remained unbeaten in Section 5-AA, defeating the Lady Cougars 25-14, 25-16, 29-27.
Brownsville improves to 4-0 in the section and 6-1 overall.
Maris Seto led the Lady Falcons with 12 assists, 10 service points and three aces. Whitney Ptak had a team-high 10 kills, and Franchesca Legros added nine service points, seven aces and two blocks.
Uniontown 3, Waynesburg Central 0 — The Lady Raider breezed to a Section 5-AA road victory over the Lady Raiders by the scores 25-14, 25-17, and 25-15.
Uniontown improves to 4-0 in the section as well as overall.
Tori Burgess finished with 13 assists and seven digs. Tori Campbell had five kills, Bella Baker had a team-high 12 digs, and Jessy Madison was strong at the net with nine blocks.
Girls soccer
Geibel Catholic 4, Jeannette 2 — Karly Judy scored a hat trick to lead the Lady Gators to a Section 4-A victory. Haley Hutchinson scored the fourth goal.
Geibel improves to 1-5 in the section and 2-6 overall.
Boys golf
Uniontown 211, Ringgold 232 — Coach Aaron Scott had a busy day, hustling back from the girls qualifier at Lindenwood Golf Club to Duck Hollow Golf Club, but the effort was worth it as the Red Raiders remained in playoff contention with a Division I, Section 2 victory over the Rams.
Luke Wallace was medalist for Uniontown (7-3, 9-3) with a 3-over 38. Josh Nelson was close behind with a 39. Tyler Frazee finished with a 43, John Voyten had a 44, and Joe Carpeal closed the scoring with a 47.
Cameron Bartkus was low man for Ringgold (0-10, 0-10) with an 11-over 46.
Jefferson-Morgan 218, Beth-Center 242 — The Rockets pulled its Division II, Section 8 record to the .500 mark with a victory over the visiting Bulldogs at Greene County Country Club.
Gillian Alexander was medalist for Jefferson-Morgan (5-5, 6-9) with a 3-over 39. Charles Mattish shot a 42, Jake Guthrie had a 43, Ryan Siebert added a 46, and Austin Clark closed the scoring with a 48.
Division II, Section 2 qualifier — Southmoreland’s Brandon Yuhouse was one of five golfers to earn a berth out of the qualifier held at Norvelt Golf Club, finishing tied for fourth with an 11-over 83.
Yough’s Alex Patricio was medalist with a 2-under 70. Mount Pleasant’s Justin Dent and Yough’s Corey Cook tied for second, both shooting 81. Greensburg C.C.’s Brady Wargofchik tied with Yuhouse.
The five golfers advance to the Division II Individual Golf Championship on Monday at Youghiogheny Country Club.
Geibel Catholic’s Ibrahim Shaktih finished tied for eighth with a 14-over 86, and Frazier’s Josh Olbrys was 25th with a 102.
Girls golf
Section 2-AAA qualifier — Uniontown’s Callahan Abel and Laurel Highlands’ Kelsey Soom had top-15 finishes in the qualifier held at Lindenwood Golf Club, but neither advanced to the WPIAL finals.
Soom shot a 92 on the par-71 course, while Abel carded a 94. The course rating was 67, so all golfers finishing at 87 or better qualified.
“Callahan was not getting off the tee very well with her drives,” said Uniontown coach Aaron Scott. “I think she missed a lot of putts.”
Section 1-AA qualifier — Frazier’s Andrea Lash advanced to the WPIAL Individual Golf Championship Wednesday by finishing third in the section qualifier. The WPIAL final will be held on Monday, Oct. 1, at Three Lakes Golf Club in Saltsburg.
The Section 2-AA qualifier was postponed to today with Jefferson-Morgan’s Gillian Alexander and the field taking to the tee at 7:30 a.m. at Allegheny Country Club.
