Twenty-six unanswered points leads Frazier past West Greene
ROGERSVILLE — Frazier scored 26 unanswered points over the final eight minutes of the first half to break a 7-7 tie and roll to a 39-21 victory over host West Greene Friday night at Kennedy Field in Rogersville.
Frazier improved to 3-1 overall and in the Tri-County South. Meanwhile, the Pioneers dropped to 1-3 both overall and in the conference.
Frazier junior quarterback Charlie Manack shined for the Commodores, tossing four touchdowns and rushing for another.
“He had quite a night,” said Frazier coach Mike Steeber. “He is very poised in the pocket and that says a lot for a guy in his third game at quarterback.”
After a low-scoring first quarter, West Greene tied the score on the first drive of the second quarter. The Pioneers used a seven-play drive to march 61 yards to even the score on a 25-yard touchdown run by running back Ronnie White.
That is when Frazier’s offense woke up, and in a big way.
The Commodores would need just three plays to march 80 yards on a scoring drive that was capped off by a 35-yard scamper by Manack.
After forcing a West Greene three and out, the Commodores wasted no time in adding on. This time Frazier marched 40 yards, using a Manack touchdown pass to receiver Blake Herron from 16 yards out to make it 19-7.
Things continued to free-fall for the Pioneers as quarterback Dalton Wildman was intercepted with less than two minutes to play in the first quarter.
Manack connected with Jaime Fell on the first play of the drive for a 43-yard touchdown and a 27-7 lead.
It looked as though that would be all the damage in the first half. However, the ensuing kickoff accidentally hit off of the West Greene up-man and was recovered by Frazier.
This time Manack needed just three plays to get his team into the end zone, hitting Herron again for another touchdown.
Over that final six plus minutes of the first-half, Frazier turned a tie game into a rout with through the air and West Greene would never recover.
“I don’t want to take anything away from them,” said Pioneers head coach John Coss. “Frazier played pretty well. I thought we played well at times.”
West Greene continued to fight in the second half as quarterback Dalton Wildman raced 54 yards on a quarterback draw to make it 33-14.
Wildman had 116 yards rushing and a touchdown. He also had a passing touchdown.
“(Wildman) is one of the fastest kids we have,” Coss said. “Our top two receivers were out tonight, so we had to run the ball”
Frazier looks to keep climbing up the standings as they host Jefferson-Morgan next Friday in a key conference clash.
“That will be a big challenge,” Steeber said. “(Jefferson) has a lot of power on offense. We need to tighten up a few things. It will be a big test for us.”
Things won’t get any easier on the other end next week as West Greene faces unbeaten Beth-Center.
