Serra Catholic blasts Geibel Catholic, 17-0
CONNELLSVILLE TWP-The Geibel Catholic Gators baseball team are a work in progress as they continue to go through growing pains to try to find the right combination of the field. Wednesday afternoon, the Serra Catholic Eagles came to town for a section 2-A game and made quick work of the Gators going home with a 17-0 win with the game stopping after three innings.
The Eagles (2-0, 6-2) collected nine hits and took advantage of four Geibel errors. Starting pitcher Brandon Coddington got credit for the win as the Gators were held hitless, as Coddington record five strikeouts.
“We got what we expected from some of our kids,” Serra’s Brian Dzurenda said. “Our pitcher threw well and threw strikes. We were fortunate to get a lot of kids into the game and look at this as a building experience. We know Geibel is rebuilding. We have a lot of respect for their school and their players.”
The Eagles started quickly with a nine-run first inning sending 13 men to the plate. Coddington led off the game with a walk, followed by a single from Chad Hazaga and another walk to Dylan Kugler to load the bases.
Wayne Hydak was hit by a pitch to bring home one run. Dan Popovich and Zach Quattrone drew bases load walks giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Parker Janosko was hit by a pitch to bring in another run. After Geibel starter Matt Mammarella struck out David Glumac, he got Marty Slovonic to ground to short forcing Janosko.
Coddington came to the plate for a second time in the first and hit a three-run homer giving the Eagles an 8-0 lead. Hazaga was safe on an error. Kugler followed with a single to left. An error on the play allowed Hazaga to score the ninth run of the inning.
“Everything is new for us this year, so this is a day to day process,” Geibel’s Pete Nace said. “Were practicing every day we can even though this is only our eighth day outside. It’s hard to simulate game situations in the gym. We have five players returning and everyone else is new. We’re working hard to get everything to jell together.”
Serra Catholic added five more runs in the second inning with Coddington getting another big hit with a two-run double as the Eagles opened up a 14-0 lead. They closed on their scoring with three more runs in the third with Janosko having the big hit in the inning with a run-producing triple.
