Lady Scots in WPIALT&F finals
The Southmoreland girls emerged from the WPIAL Class AA team track & field semifinal held at Waynesburg Central on Wednesday afternoon as the lone undefeated team to earn a berth into next week’s district final.
The Lady Scots defeated the host Lady Raiders, 93-57, Keystone Oaks, 107-43, and OLSH, 110-39, for the lone berth into the WPIAL team finals next Thursday at Baldwin High School.
Waynesburg beat Keystone Oaks, 79-66, and OLSH, 78-71.
Key performers for the Lady Raiders were Skylar Braga in the jumps and sprints, Richelle Tharp in the throwing events, including an overall first-place finish in the javelin (113-4), Danielle Jacobs in the middle distances, and Michelle Cesa in both hurdles.
The Raiders and Scotties did not fare as well with South Park emerging with the finals berth.
South Park beat Chartiers-Houston, 100-50, Southmoreland, 106½-43½, and Waynesburg, 118-32. Southmoreland defeated Chartiers-Houston, 90-60, and Waynesburg, 102-48. The Raiders lost to Chartiers-Houston, 92-57.
In Class AAA action, host Hempfield sent both boys and girls teams to the finals.
The Laurel Highlands boys lost to the Spartans, 126½-23½, Canon-McMillan, 94½-55½, and Mars, 92-48. The Mustangs’ Dontay Jacobs had a pair of overall first-place finishes in the 100 (11.1) and 200 (23.0).
The Fillies lost to Mars, 80-69, the Lady Spartans, 117-32, and Canon-McMillan, 90-59. Melissa McCann beat the field in the 800 (2:23.5), while Ashley Galderisi finished second overall in the 200.
Uniontown ran at the West Mifflin semifinal. No boys finished in first place, while several girls had marquee performances. The 3,200 relay team of Julie Gerber, Alexis Wivell, Jade Bellotti and Julie Friend won in 9:53. Friend (1,600, 5:33) and Gerber (3,200, 12:07) had individual first-place finishes on the track. Nicole Bell cleared 5-0 to win the high jump.
