Laurel Higlands and Uniontown have strong showing at qualifiers
Several boys and girls from Laurel Highlands competed at the Class AAA Track & Field qualifiers at West Mifflin on Tuesday.
For the boys, the 400 relay team of Coron Mains, Joe Pegg, Jason Leone, and Dontay Jacobs are moving on finishing with a time of 45.51. Jacobs also is moving on in the 100 (11.44) and the 200 (23.68) as well. In the 1,600, Mike Cecchini finished seventh (4:41.2). The javelin saw Ryan Gesso finish sixth with a throw of 153 feet. Pole vault had Sean Monaghan taking seventh with a throw of 11 feet, six inches. EJ Blaszczak took a fourth place in the triple jump (42 feet, ¼ inch) and a sixth in the long jump (19 feet). Leone finished up the day placing eight in the triple jump with 40 feet ½ inch.
On the girls side, the relay team of Bristyn Yanick, Marrisa Gieghert, Elli Monaghan, and Messlia McCann took third (10:15). McCann also finished sixth in the 800 (2:24.1). In the 3200, Marrisa Gieghert finished third with a 11:45. Monaghan also had a strong finish with a fifth (11:58). In the high jump, Shelby Burns qualified in the top eight spots. In the javelin, Hailey Gusso finished sixth to move on. Audrey Kopich also took top eight in the pole vault. Aaliyah Winfrey finished third in both the triple jump and the long jump.
Uniontown also had a strong showing at the qualifiers. For the boys, the 3,200 group of Nate Edenfield, Brady Guthrie, Bennett Clark, and Jake Cahn qualified and the girls 3,200 squad of Julie Gerber, Alexis Wivell, Jade Bellotti, and Julie Friend also had a strong enough time to compete next week. Guthrie, Friend, and Gerber also qualified in the individual 3,200. In the 1,600, Endenfield, Friend, Gerber will all move on as well. Endenfield along with Belloti took home top eight finishes in the 800 to advance.
Bru Martin had a nice day in the 110 hurdles and triple jump to get him to next week. The high jump saw Nicole Bell finish in the top eight and Sarah Brown qualifies in the long jump.
High school baseball
Connellsville 6, Baldwin 5 — Connellsville held off a late rally from host Baldwin to secure the non-section victory.
Evan Onusko and Grant Wortman each had doubles and JT Stevenson blasted a home run for the Falcons.
Alex Pantufo went 4-for-4 for Bladwin with two singles, a double, and a home run but it wasn’t enough for Bladwin.
Darrell Ross picked up the victory with Ryan Huey earning the save.
Albert Gallatin 15, Geibel Catholic 0; Albert Gallatin 16, Geibel Catholic 1 — In game one of a non-section varsity double header, Chris Uphold hit a grand slam home run and a single and Jamal Palmer homered and doubled as AG beat Geibel 15-0.
Uphold and Palmer both homered in the 10-run second inning for the Colonials. Cullen Hoone, Brandon Kenney, Ryan Stewart and Tyler Dubovich all had two hits.
Dubovich was the winning pitcher, striking out seven.
In game two of a non-section varsity double header, Cullen Hoone threw a no-hitter from the mound, Zach Harkins homered, tripled and singled, Tyler Dubovich homered and singled, CJ Lytle doubled twice and Julian Baires-Tweed singled twice to lead Albert Gallatin to the sweep 16-1.
Dubovich and Harkins both homered in the second inning. Lytle and Harkins both had four RBI’s for Albert Gallatin.
Geibel’s run scored when losing pitcher Matt Kush was hit by a pitch leading off the second inning, stole second, went to third base when the throw got away for an error and scored on a Jason Speeney sacrifice fly.
Laurel Highlands 11, Mount Pleasant 1 -Laurel Highlands finished up their season with a nice Section 2-AAA win over Mt. Pleasant.
Colin McKey went the entire game striking out nine batters and while only walking one.
Ted Sova had a big day for the Mustangs with three hits and collection four RBI’s.
Joey Paull took the loss for Mt. Pleasant.
High school softball
Brownsville 13, California 0 — Brownsville has little issue with visiting California in a five-inning non-section game.
Miranda Arison was strong in the circle going all five innings and striking out six batters.
Tiffany Markovitch had the only extra-base hit for Brownsville with a double.
Tristian Lint took the loss for California.
