Cal U wins opening game in NCAA softball tournament

California (Pa.) opened the NCAA Division II softball tournament in style Friday with a convincing 13-0 victory over Chowan (N.C.).

Natalya Smarra and Shelby Heyd combined for eight RBI in the victory over the No. 8 seed.

Smarra belted a pair of home runs, a two-run shot in the second inning and a solo blast in the fifth. She also added a double to finish with four RBI. Heyd belted a three-run homer in the second inning, and went 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored.

Waynesburg Central graduate Breanna Morris had an RBI double in the 5-run second inning.

Alex Sagl and Belle Vernon graduate Haley Bashada combined for a 3-hit shutout. Bashada allowed two hits in the only inning she worked.

The host Vulcans (37-4) play at 10:30 a.m. today.
