Big second quarter lifts Slippery Rock over Vulcans, 35-17
Cody Nuzzo spotted California (Pa.) to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, but Slippery Rock outscored the Vulcans, 21-0, in the second quarter Saturday afternoon on its way to a 35-17 PSAC-West victory.
Nigel Barksdale, John Schlademan and Brett Crenshaw scored with in a 7½-minute span in the second quarter.
Cody Schroeder’s 14-yard touchdown run at 10:49 of the third quarter ended The Rock’s scoring run, but Slippery Rock (8-1) scored 10 minutes later to regain its 18-point advantage.
The Vulcans’ Trey Johnson closed the scoring on a 44-yard touchdown pass from Schroeder with 2:08 remaining in the game.
Slippery Rock held the Vulcans (6-3) to 112 yards rushing with Jeff Knox Jr. leading the visitors with just 15 yards on 12 carries. Schroeder completed 11-of-26 passes for 176 yards and one interception. Mike Williams caught six passes for a game-high 134 yards.
Barksdale led Slippery Rock with 125 yards rushing on 14 carries, and completed 26-of-48 passes for 274 yards and one interception. Schademan was Barksdale favorite target with eight receptions for 105 yards.
