Mustangs defeat cross-town rivals
Laurel Highlands earned a Section 6-AA win at Uniontown on Thursday evening. The Mustangs defeated the Red Raiders 3-0.
Laurel Highlands maintained control of the ball through most of the first half and through the majority of the second.
Aaron Hanzes headed the first goal for Laurel Highlands at 36:03, just four minutes into the game, on a corner kick from teammate Matt Weiss.
Drew DeBerry scored the second goal just a few minutes later at 32:38. DeBerry also scored the Mustangs’ third goal two minutes later at 30:32.
The Red Raiders came back from halftime ready to play and, while they didn’t score any goals, they kept their cross-town rivals from doing so, either.
“Everybody had some time tonight,” Laurel Highlands coach Zach Sipe said. “And we made it through the game without any injuries heading into the playoffs.”
“We just need to work on finishing going into Monday’s game against Elizabeth-Forward,” Sipe added.
Uniontown coach Eric Dolfi was pleased with his team.
“We played the best soccer we’ve played in a while,” Dolfi said. “They’re going to playoffs and we held them at three goals.”
“We made great strides this year,” Raiders assistant coach Ray Keller said. “We’ve had a lot of growth and we’ve got a lot to build on. We only had two seniors, one’s an exchange student and it’s the other’s first year. We played a great game.”
“It’s a young team,” Dolfi added. “We’re very happy.”
Uniontown finishes the season at 1-10 in section and 1-12 overall.
The Mustangs (10-2 in section and 13-3 overall) host Elizabeth-Forward at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
