Aeschbacher, Welsh wage TD Club battle
Tyler Aeschbacher of Carmichaels continues to lead the Herald-Standard Touchdown Club race, but Beth-Center’s Anthony Welsh is closing the gap.
Aeschbacher scored two touchdowns, kicked an extra point and added a two-pointer during the Mikes’ win over West Greene to push his leading total to 119 points.
Welsh, the Bulldogs’ super sophomore running back, cashed in with three touchdowns in BC’s win at Vincentian Academy to give him 19 TDs and 114 points on the season.
Both teams are in the playoffs, so the race for No. 1 in the Herald-Standard Touchdown Club continues for at least one more week.
The Touchdown Club recognizes the top scoring football players among the 16 schools in the area. Non-playoff teams who will play a 10th game are reminded to phone in results, so we can update the Touchdown Club rankings to reflect all games played by area teams.
Waynesburg Central’s John Glen Davis held onto third place despite not scoring last Friday. He has scored 85 points, eight more than Mapletown’s Adam Hein, who added an extra point kick and a two-point run last week for a total of 77 points scored.
Two of Welsh’s Beth-Center teammates, Nico Brown and Matt Riggle moved into fifth and sixth place, respectively. Brown scored two touchdowns and a two-point conversion last week (and was credited for a touchdown he had scored earlier in the season) to push his total to 76 on the season, while Riggle scored two TDs and has 72 points on the season.
Frazier’s Nick Smalich scored three touchdowns in the Commodores’ win at Mapletown to move into seventh place with 70 points scored this season. Smalich and the Commodores are also in the playoffs and can add to his total.
The same holds true for Carmichaels’ Brennan McMinn, who scored a touchdown last week and has 68 total points, and Belle Vernon’s Cody Menges, who scored once for the Leps last week and has 66 total points.
Mapletown’s Dereck Riggleman also has 66 points on 11 touchdowns to round out the top 10.
