LH girls finish third at Gateway Invitational

Marisa Deichert finished third Saturday morning, leading the Laurel Highlands girls cross country team to a third-place finish in the Gateway Invitational held at Boyce Park.

Deichert finished the undulating course in 20:52, just nine seconds behind West Allegheny’s Alexis O’Shea and 14 seconds shy of first-place finisher Bria McMahon, from Franklin.

The Fillies’ Melissa McCann was 10th overall in 22:35, with Brystyn Yanick earning a spot on the medals stand by finishing 20th in 23:25.

Norwin won the team title with 88 points. The Hempfield girls placed second with 101 points, and the Fillies had 109 in third.

Fox Chapel dominated the boys race, easily winning the team title with 68 points. The Foxes’ Ethan Martin edged teammate Colin Martin by one second, 17:25-17:26, for the individual title.

The Laurel Highlands boys did not have a finisher in the top 20 and finished 10th in the team standings with 296 points.

In the 42nd Marty Uher/Cal U Invitational, the Uniontown boys finished second on the strength of Nate Edenfield’s first-place finish. Edenfield completed the 5K course in 17:15.

The Red Raiders’ Brady Guthrie was fifth overall in 17:51. Jacob Cahn (14, 18:57), Paul Klatt (15, 18:31), and Patrick Hager (25, 19:30) closed the scoring runs.

Uniontown finished second in the team standings with 60 points. Mt. Lebanon finished first with 33.

Thomas McKnight was the first Albert Gallatin runner to cross the finish line, placing 38th overall in 20:36. The Colonials were ninth with 252 points.

The girls results were not available at press time.

Women’s volleyball

Messiah 3, Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus 0; Marymount University 3, Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus 1 — The Lady Roaring Lions dropped both ends of a tournament hosted by Messiah College.

Messiah swept past Penn State Fayette, 25-17, 25-16, 25-17. The Lady Lions won the first set against Marymount, 25-11, but lost the next three, 25-20, 25-15, 26-24.

Emily Konter had 39 assists, and eight digs in the two matches. Janelle Cooper finished with 16 kills. Emily Caldwell had 13 digs in the second match, and Kelsey Tyler added five kills against Marymount. Megan Manack had six kills againts Messiah.

Penn State Fayette opens the conference schedule Wednesday night at home against Penn State Greater Allegheny.

High school soccer

FCCA Shoot-Out Tournament — The host Connellsville girls won both matches, while the host Albert Gallatin boys split their two matches in the season-opening tournament.

The Lady Falcons defeated Albert Gallatin, 10-0, and Laurel Highlands, 5-2. The Fillies earned a split with a 1-0 win over Bentworth. Geibel Catholic beat Uniontown, 4-0, and the Lady Raiders earned a split with a 3-2 win over the Lady Colonials.

The Colonials beat Uniontown, 6-2, but lost to Connellsville, 4-0. Connellsville earned a second win against Bentworth, 3-0. The Geibel Catholic boys won a pair, beating Uniontown, 11-0, and Brownsville, 2-1. Bentworth defeated Brownsville, 2-0.
