Colonials defeat Ringgold, 231-238, for first win of season

The Albert Gallatin boys golf team needed over half the season, but the Colonials finally chalked one in the win column Tuesday afternoon with a 231-238 Section 2-AAA victory over visiting Ringgold at Duck Hollow Golf Club.

The home squad held a seven-stroke lead through four golfers, and the No. 1-2 foursome matched cards at 92-92 to maintain the spread.

The Colonials’ Zach Harkins was medalist with an 8-over 43. Blake Reicholf was a shot off Harkins’ score, and Joe Davis came in with a 47. Tanner Kutek had a rough hole, and came in with a 48. Seth Goletz closed the scoring with a 49. Todd Eicher’s 51 was not used.

According to Albert Gallatin coach Bernie Wydo, the victory was much needed, especially with the Section 2-AAA tournament next Tuesday at Duck Hollow Golf Club.

“We’re happy campers today,” said Wydo, whose squad is now 1-7 in the section and 1-8 overall. “We needed a win for our confidence.”

Despite the lack of victories, Wydo has seen some light at the end of the tunnel.

“We’re getting lower. Our goal now is to get into the 220s. I’ll take a 225 from these guys. That’s what we’re looking for. That would make us more competitive,” said Wydo. “This might give us more confidence going into the qualifer.

“We just make fundamental errors with chipping and putting.”

Chris Essey, Rob Nemec, Neil Hancock and David Zitney all shot 46 for the Rams (1-6). Jordan Chipps closed the scoring with a 54.
