Henneman accounts for 5 TDs in Rockets’ 56-0 victory

ROGERSVILLE — Junior quarterback Rece Henneman tallied 257 total yards of offense and accounted for five touchdowns, as Jefferson-Morgan dominated West Greene, 56-0, in a Tri-County South Conference contest Friday night.

After being shutout in Week 1, the Rockets (2-1, 2-1) have outscored the competition by a 110-0 margin the past two weeks.

“We had a bad taste in our mouths after the Carmichaels game,” J-M coach Liam Ryan said. “It was disappointing to open the season like that. We were able to bounce back and the guys have worked hard in practice. We are finally getting healthy and our offense has been clicking these last two weeks.”

Henneman rushed for 93 yards on five carries and went 7-for-10 with 164 passing yards in the lopsided contest.

The scoring started quickly for the visitors, as for the second straight week senior Logan Bowman returned the opening kickoff for a score, this time it was an 80-yard dash into the end zone against the Pioneers (1-2, 1-2).

“I was focus on securing the ball and then I saw I had a lane,” Bowman said. “I wanted to hit it hard and make sure I got to the outside. The last two weeks we have really picked it up on special teams and on offense.”

After the teams traded a couple of possessions, Bowman added a 20-yard rushing score with 2:57 left in the opening quarter.

Bowman rushed for 75 yards on nine carries.

On the Rockets’ next drive, Henneman scored his first points of the night on an 80-yard, quarterback draw play that saw the 6-foot-5, 200-pound signal collar bowling over West Greene’s defenders.

“That was one of the new plays that coach put in this week,” Henneman said. “I saw that I had some room and the hole was wide open. I was able to brush off a defender and cut it back to the sidelines for a score.”

Henneman added a pair of one-yard quarterback keepers for the Rockets in the second stanza to extend its lead.

The only mistake that Henneman made was a throw over the middle that was intercepted by Pioneers’ junior linebacker Bray Jackson.

West Greene couldn’t capitalize on the turnover and four plays later, an errant snap on a punt sailed over the head of the punter through the back of the end zone for a safety.

“We have been attacking on defense the last two weeks,” Ryan said. “We are running to the football and are causing a lot of havoc in the backfield. Every guy has an assignment and we are working on the basics on defense.”

Henneman lobbed a 25-yard score to senior wideout Gerald Metz for the final score of the first half and the Rockets held a 44-0 lead at intermission.

After the Pioneers fumbled the ball on its first possession of the second half, Henneman collected his final touchdown of the day, a 53-yard pass to senior tight end Jeff Jento.

“I give all of the credit to our line,” Henneman said of offensive success the last two weeks. “They have been opening up holes for the backs and giving me a clean pocket to work in. Our receivers are really going after the balls and are just using their speed and size to win battles in the passing game.”

With the mercy rule in effect, the second half went by quickly and the last touchdown of the night came in the fourth quarter, when freshmen Dustin Schimansky returned a three-yard fumble return for a score after another errant snap on a punt.

West Greene’s senior dual-threat quarterback Dalton Wildman was bottled up all game, and only collected 61 yards of total offense. Freshmen tailback Douglas Berdine was the leading rusher for the Pioneers with 28 yards.

The Rockets will look to continue its winning ways Friday, as they host a critical, conference contest against Avella.

“Against Avella, we have to be discipline in our assignments,” Ryan said. “They can run it and throw it on you. We have to stop the run with our front seven and get some pressure on their talented quarterback. Pressure is going to be key for both teams.”

For the Pioneers, they will try to snap its two-game losing skid at Frazier next week.
