WAYNESBURG — One by one, Bo Hampson, Hunter Cenname and John Glen Davis made Brownsville pay for its mistakes, as Waynesburg Central beat the Falcons, 35-6, Friday night.

Hampson and Cenname scored two touchdowns each and Davis added one, as the Raiders improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in Interstate Conference games, at the expense of the mistake-prone Falcons, who fell to 0-3.

“We looked really good,” Waynesburg Central coach Russ Moore said. “I mentioned on the sideline that those guys are like a three-headed spear and my assistant, Bobby Stephenson, corrected me. He said, ‘That’s a triton, coach.’ “

So, maybe a new nickname was born.

The triton gained most of the 321 rushing yards the Raiders put up against Brownsville, with Hampson leading the way with 131 yards on 13 carries, including a 50-yard score that made it 28-0 at halftime.

Cenname also broke 100, with 121 yards on 11 carries. Davis added 72 yards on 13 carries.

“What kind of hurts is that our quarterback (Colby Collins) never gets any of the credit,” said Moore. “But he runs this offense and, especially in the first half, whatever we called seemed to work.”

The Raiders rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns in the first quarter and followed with 119 yards and a score in the second quarter.

Of course, it was the first half when Brownsville had all three of its turnovers. A high punt snap set up Waynesburg at the Brownsville 13 and it was followed by a Brownsville fumble that put the Raiders at the Falcons’ 21-yard line in the first quarter.

Dominick Sarra’s interception of a tipped pass ended a promising Brownsville drive, but three plays later, Hampson broke free from midfield and it was all over.

“You’ve got to block and tackle to win and we didn’t do a very good job of either,” Brownsville coach Von Braddock said. “The effort wasn’t very good, plus we had three first-half turnovers. You can’t win like that.”

Bright spots were few and far between for the Falcons, but they got 99 yards rushing from quarterback Shane Roebuck, plus 88 yards and a 14-yard touchdown run from Byron Mayers.

“Props to the Roebuck kid,” Moore said. “He’s only a junior and he’s a difference-maker. He’s a good kid and he played a good game for them.”

Moore hopes this big win will serve as a catalyst for his team in the always-tough Interstate Conference. The Raiders travel to Greensburg Central Catholic next week, while the Falcons travel to Jeannette.

“This was a great win for us,” Moore said. “I told them tonight to start quick and to believe in themselves and they did. Our kids needed that to feel good about themselves and get their confidence going.”
