Lady Falcons need OT to defeat Greensburg Salem 3-2
CONNELLSVILLE — The Lady Falcons of Connellsville defeated Greensburg Salem, 3-2, Monday evening at Connellsville Stadium in a non-section match that was scoreless until late in the second half.
The first 60 minutes of the game came and went without any goals.
“There was a lot of back and forth,” Connellsville head coach Jeff Puskar said.
Senior Ashton Grimm scored the first goal of the night for the Lady Falcons with just over 15 minutes left in the match.
Just over two minutes later, sophomore Mary Markle countered with a goal for the Lady Lions.
Connellsville took control of the ball and freshman Anna DeMarco scored a goal less than two minutes later, with 10:55 left in the game.
Greensburg Salem senior, Ali Sheffler, tied up the match, 2-2, with a goal with 9:36 left on the clock.
With 10 minutes added to the clock, the Lady Falcons stepped up, taking control of the ball.
Connellsville junior Angela Bloom scored the game-winning goal with 8:43 on the clock, ending the game.
The teams battled over control of the ball up until the last seconds of the game, and as the announcer counted down from ten, shouts of “overtime” coming from the parents in the stands could be heard.
“Even though the girls that scored the goals will get the highlights, this was a group effort,” Puskar told his team after the match, “and I’m proud of you.
“This was a good game for our younger girls. They learned to keep their composure. It was a tough game.”
“PT (Penn Trafford) is going to be a handful, but if we play with the energy we did tonight, it’ll be a good game,” Puskar said of Wednesday’s upcoming game.
The Lady Falcons will host Penn Trafford Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Section 1-AAA play.
“We got a shot of confidence tonight,” Puskar added, “We’ll have to work our tails off.”
