Red Raiders open section with win at AG
YORK RUN — The Uniontown and Albert Gallatin almost beat the rain Friday afternoon, as the showers hit just as the 3,200 was getting underway.
The precipitation didn’t dampen the Red Raiders’ efforts on the track, as the visitors carried most of the running events in Uniontown’s 92-49 Section 2-AAA victory over the Colonials.
Uniontown (1-0, 1-1) spread the wealth on the track with Bru Martin (110 high hurdles, 15.69), Nate Edenfield (1,600, 4:40; 800, 2:09.11), Braden Carei (400, 55.7), Malachi Mellema (300 intermediate hurdles, 43.0), Doug Lewis (200, 24.26), and Brady Guthrie (3,200, 10:35) all with first-place individual finishes.
The Red Raiders’ Jake Cahn, Brady Guthrie, Carei and Edenfield won the 3,200 relay in 8:52.
Carei’s victory in the 400 was just the second time he has participated in the event.
“I’m relatively new,” Carei said of running the 400. “I’m running in the first relay and I want to get more speed.”
All the athletes had to deal with a strong wind around Albert Gallatin’s stadium, including the runners on the track.
“(My time in the 400) was pretty good for the wind. On the back stretch, the wind was head on. (The wind) makes you want to stand up. It’s more mental,” explained Carei.
“I’d like to be able to reach the low 50s (50 seconds). I think that could translate to the 3,200. There’s always a last lap.”
The Red Raiders also pulled in key points in the field events from first-place finishes by Martin (triple jump, 44-4), Jesse Sarver (discus, 114-0), Tristan Sandrosky (shot put, 40-7), and Bobby Basile (javelin, 124-10).
The Colonials’ Tanner Kutek was the only boy to win two field events taking first in both the high jump (5-10) and long jump (18-9¼).
Kutek enjoyed opening the season against the Red Raiders.
“It’s competition, for sure. They’re a rival,” said Kutek.
Kutek was clean from the opening height at 5-feet through his winning height. He had 6-feet cleared, but a different part of his body nicked the bar on all three misses.
“My PR (personal best) is 6-feet, so I’m happy with my jumps,” said Kutek, who was an All-County golfer in the fall. “The long jump was a PR.”
Kutek was flipping between jumping pits for his two events.
“It was tough,” explained Kutek. “It’s different. I’m trying to spring outward in long jump, and upward in high jump. It was tough at first, but I got used to it.”
Albert Gallatin’s Donicio McKoy won the 100 in 11.67 seconds and ran the opening leg of the victorious 400 relay. The senior was running on an ankle he tweaked playing basketball, so he’s not up to full speed yet.
“I want to see progression from last year. The goal is 10.8 (seconds). I keep chipping (away) at it,” said McKoy. “The ankle really affects me coming out of the blocks, pushing off the leg.
“I want to see a 10.7 up (on the scoreboard clock).”
