Rohanna makes the cut at Mundo Maya Open
Robert Rohanna had a few ups and downs in the second round of the Mundo Maya Open presented by Heineken on Friday, but the Waynesburg Central graduate had more ups than downs to advance through to the third round of the PGA TOUR Latinoamerica event.
Rohanna shot a 1-under 71 for a two-day total of 1-under 143. He is in an eight-way tie in 15th place.
American Rich Cochran III is alone atop the leaderboard at 8-under 136.
“I started on the back, played really solid through No. 17,” said Rohanna via Facebook Messenger.
He birdies on two of the three par-5s on the back, Nos. 11-16 to go 2-under, but gave both strokes back with a double bogey-5 on No. 17.
“I hit another good shot on No. 17, but it just went to the right and it was in no man’s land,” explained Rohanna.
He closed his front nine holes with a bogey-5 to go out in 1-over 37.
“You never want to give shots back quick, but it just happens to be that way,” said Rohanna. “I had a couple mishits, but the wind was intense this morning and I just hit it in the wrong sports on a few holes.”
Sensing that the cut would be around even par, Rohanna upped his game on the front nine to come back in 2-under 34.
“I made a good birdie on No. 1. I hit three good shots,” said Rohanna. “I figured I needed to get back to even to be inside the cut. I hit it the same on both sides. I just made a few putts on the front.”
Rohanna made four consecutive pars, then moved to 1-under with a birdie-3 on No. 6. He promptly gave the stroke back win a bogey-4 on the next hole, but righted the ship on No. 8 wiht a birdie-4. He closed with a par.
Now, he set himself up for his first weekend rounds since the opening tournament in Colombia.
“I missed some short ones today, but I made a few 12-, 15-footers so I guess they even out,” said Rohanna. “I’ve been striking the ball well so if that continues I can make something happen if the putter gets hot.
“They’ve had some tough pins the last two days, but the greens are definitely ‘get able’ if you hit close enough.”
