West Mifflin nips Belle Vernon in baseball
West Mifflin, 2, Belle Vernon 1 — Belle Vernon’s Dylan Pietrantoni turned a strong performance on the mound, but it wasn’t enough as host West Mifflin edged the Leopards, 2-1, in a Section 4-AAA clash.
The first-place Titans (7-2, 5-1) broke a scoreless tie in the fifth when they dented Pietrantoni for two runs — one of them unearned — on a fielder’s choice and Zach Fodor’s RBI single.
Belle Vernon (6-3, 2-3) scored it only run in the sixth when Evan Hannan walked, took second on Niko Tasser’s single and scored on Parker Lynn’s double.
Tasser and Lynn each had two hits for the Leps.
Pietrantoni allowed one earned run on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts in going the distance.
Winning pitcher Zachary Salmon gave up the one run on six hits in 4 1/3 innings. Kyle Oakes pitched one scoreless inning and Fodor got the final five outs to earn the save.
