Frustrated Rohanna misses cut in Argentina

Robert Rohanna left the Cordoba Golf Club Friday afternoon frustrated and wanting after he missed the cut at the PGA TOUR Latinoamerica’s 83rd Abierto OSDE del Centro presented by FiberCorp by three strokes.

Rohanna shot a 3-over 74 in the second round for a two-day total of 7-over 149 at Cordoba Golf Club in Cordoba, Argentina. The cut (top 55 and ties) was at 4-over 146.

Argentina’s Fermin Noste sits atop the leaderboard at the midpoint of the tournament with a 5-under 137 (71-66).

The Waynesburg native started on No. 10 and started with three consecutive pars. Rohanna gave another stroke away with a bogey-4 on No. 13, but took it back with a birdie-4 on No. 16. He finished his front nine with a bogey-4 on No. 18 to go out in 1-over 37.

The projected cutline was at 4-over as Rohanna made the turn to the front nine, and was right there after a birdie-3 on No. 3, his 12th hole. He followed with a par on No. 4, a par-3.

“Sadly, I played pretty well again,” said Rohanna via Facebook Messenger. “I made a few poor bogeys on my front side, then got it back to even after 12 holes.”

Rohanna saw No. 5, a par-4, and his 14th hole as the pivotal point in his second round.

“I get to m 14th hole, which was No. 5, and hit two good shots to about 4 feet,” explained Rohanna. “I had a downhill slider. I lipped out and had 8 feet coming back and I missed that, too.

“Yeah, (he thought he had momentum) until I 3-putted my 14th hole after I had a 4-foot putt to get under par.”

Reeling a bit from the 3-putt, Rohanna came to another par-4, No. 6.

“I hit a decent drive and had sand wedge in. I landed my sand wedge right beside the pin in the middle of the green and it bounced to about 10 yards over,” said Rohanna. “I didn’t get it up and down (for another bogey).”

Rohanna parred the next two holes, but felt he left a stroke or two out on the holes.

“I had birdie looks on Nos. 16-17,” said Rohanna, continuing, “Then, on No. 18, I was sitting at 6-over and the cut looked like it was going to be 5-over at best. I had a 15-footer straight downhill with about 3 feet of break. It was a putt in normal conditions you would just like to 2-putt, but I didn’t have that luxury. I hit it a little firmer then I needed to because I needed to at least get to the hole.

“And, I proceeded to miss the next one as well for another 3-putt.”

Rohanna managed to stay away from big numbers, he had no double bogeys or worse, but didn’t put up many low numbers, either. He carded three birdies, 23 pars and 10 bogeys, and averaged 3.0 strokes on the par-3s, 4.36 on the par-4s, and 4.84 on the par-5s.

“Yes, it’s frustrating because I didn’t even play poorly. I’ve played worse and shot better scores, many times,” said Rohanna. “It’s just hard to make up strokes around this place and I gave away a legitimate opportunity. That I hit it well, my putting kind of let me down in momentum situations.

“But, as a whole, I hit and putted okay. It was just a tough course. I didn’t play much different than I did last week (a second-place finish in Mexico).”

Rohanna will keep plugging away next week as the PGA TOUR Latinoamerica moves to Montevideo, Uruguay, for the Roberto De Vincenzo Invitational Copa NEC at the Club de Golf del Uruguay from April 21-27. The tour takes a break, returning to the Dominican Republic on May 12-18. Rohanna plans to play in a U.S. Open qualifier in Tampa during the break.
