Lady Raiders in 2nd after beating Mount Pleasant
Uniontown’s softball team woke up this morning in unfamiliar territory, but coach Steve Forsythe will take it and hopes to built on it.
The Lady Raiders took sole possession of second place in Section 4-AAA with a nail-biting 6-5 win over Mount Pleasant at Bailey Park Tuesday.
“This is really big for our girls,” Forsythe said. “I don’t think a Uniontown softball team has ever been in second place in a section race before.
The historic win lifted the Lady Raiders (8-5) to 7-2 in section games, a game ahead of (8-4, 6-3) Mount Pleasant. Greensburg Salem remains in first place at 8-0 and has a win over Uniontown already, but Uniontown would like to hold onto second place.
The Lady Raiders visit Greensburg Salem Thursday, host Albert Gallatin Tuesday and close the section schedule a week from Monday at Laurel Highlands.
Jordan Gibson was the offensive star for Uniontown. She hit a two-run homer in the Lady Raiders’ 5-run first inning and knocked in the other run with a double in the third.
Leighlyn Guthrie struck out nine to get the pitching win over Ashley Pospisil, who had three strikeouts.
Paige Hertzog homered, doubled and singled for The Lady Vikings, while Courtney Zelmore tripled.
The Lady Raiders held a 6-1 lead until Mount Pleasant put up four runs in the top of the seventh to make it interesting.
Uniontown is one win or one Brownsville loss away from clinching a berth in the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs.
