Cal women keep rolling along, breeze past SRU, 16-1
Natalie Wideman tied the record for RBI in a game Monday afternoon after she belted a pair of grand slams to rout The Rock in the opening game of a scheduled doubleheader.
The second game was cancelled because of rain and poor field conditions.
California (30-4) remains perfect in the PSAC-West, improving to 23-0. Slippery Rock (11-16, 16-26) was eliminated from the postseason.
Wideman hit her first grand slam in the 8-run first inning and clubbed her second in the 5-run second inning. Wideman went 3-for-4 with eight RBI and three runs scored.
Stephani Ellis and Natalya Smarra hit solo home runs in the top of the third inning, and Shelby Lia had a solo shot for the lone run in the top of the fifth inning.
Waynesburg Central grad Breanna Morris was 2-for-4, both hits were doubles, with two runs scored and two RBI.
Alex Sagl (19-2) pitched the first four innings for the win, allowing one earned run (on McKenzie Popatak’s solo home run) on three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.
Belle Vernon graduate Haley Bashada pitched the fifth inning, allowing one hit while striking out two.
