Superick wins Fayette County Open seniors title
Steve Superick is a veteran golfer who returned to play in the Fayette County Open after a lengthy hiatus. But, when he took the tee in Saturday’s third round Superick was a rookie as the newest member of the seniors division.
Superick closed with an even-par 70 Sunday at Springdale Golf Club in the second round of the seniors play to slide past John Kingora and Bernie Wydo to win the title with a 2-over 144.
Kingora shot a 1-under 69 to finish one stroke behind Superick and Wydo, who led on the first day after shooting a 1-over 73, carded a 4-over 74 to finish alone in third place at 147.
“It’s been five, six years since I last played, and this is the first year I’m eligible for the seniors,” said Superick.
Superick played the front in 1-under 35 and the back in 1-over 35.
“I had a lot of chances on the front. Nos. 10, 11 and 12 are a tough three holes and I parred all three,” said Superick. “I had a good par on No. 11 and had a nice up-and-down on No. 12. I almost had a two on No. 13, then I 3-putted the next two holes.
“I was 2-under after No. 13.”
Superick, who finished 12th in the main draw with a four-day total of 307, said he enjoyed his return to the county tournament.
“It was just fun to be with the guys. George Knapp is an old friend from when I was the pro at Uniontown (Country Club),” said Superick, adding, “It’s a lot different playing in a tournament then playing with your buddies.”
PRETTY GOOD SHOOTIN’: The threesome of Ian Picosky, Scott Bush and Bob Tajc had the best play of the final round shooting a collective 2-under as a group.
Picosky had the low round of the day with a 2-under 68, including one approach shot that truly plugged in the green because of the wet conditions of the course, the result of Saturday’s drenching rains. Bush finished with a 1-under 69, while Tajc shot a 1-over 71.
RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY: After three relatively calm weather days, the fourth and final day of the Fayette County Open was very wet.
As previously mentioned, the deluge that rambled through Fayette County on Saturday muddied the course in spots.
The rain hit hard again, accompanied by thunder, around noon, leading course owner Joe Gudac to suspend play at 12:04 p.m. The rain subsided and thunder stopped booming, allowing play to resume about 30 minutes later.
The rain was not done, though, returning twice more before Jeremy Enslen closed out his third county crown.
IT’S GOOD TO BE THE KING: Nearly half of the top 14 finishers in the main draw were Fayette County Open champions.
Jeremy Enslen led the charge with his third title. Other former champions in the field were Santino Marchitello (T-3rd, 292), Kingora (T-3rd, 292), Pat Calvaresi (8, 302), Wydo (13, 309), and Mike Revak (13, 309).
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED: After Jim Kubina finished the second round Friday at Uniontown Country Club, he said he was halfway to his goals.
“I want four rounds in the 70s and to finish in the top 10,” said Kubina.
Kubina closed the deal Sunday with a 3-over 73 to finish in fifth place with a 16-over 300.
ON THE SCHEDULE: The Fayette Scholastic Open is on the horizon with the seven county golf programs, along with Belle Vernon and Southmoreland, starting the 2014 high school season on Friday, Aug. 15, at 9 a.m. at Duck Hollow Golf Club.
