Ethan Weiser came of age as a football player last fall. A senior wide receiver/cornerback at Frazier, Weiser turned his game up a notch in the second half of what became a playoff year for the Commodores.

He had already arrived as a javelin thrower and had been an outstanding student for as long as he can remember.

The confluence of those activities is what made it easy for Frazier administrators to select Weiser as the the school’s fall sports male representative in the Centennial Chevrolet Scholar/Athlete Spotlight program.

Weiser, who will add basketball to his resume this winter, is undecided about which college to attend, but plans to study his way to medical school. He also intends to throw the javelin as a collegian.

“Toward the end of last year, Ethan rally came on,” Frazier football coach Mike Steeber said. “He had a tremendous playoff game in our loss to Clairton. It was the highlight of his year, I thought.”

“I don’t remember the exact stats, but I had a bunch of catches, including a diving catch that got us to the 2-yard line,” Weiser said. “Plus, I had five or six tackles and a few deflected passes.”

Weiser believes he’s better in the defensive secondary than he is on offense, but in carrying the Commodore torch in the playoff game, he became a leader Steeber will count on and his teammates will look up to.

“This year, he has picked up right where he left off,” Steeber said. “He’s definitely a leader on the team.”

Weiser already is a leader in the class room, as his 3.65 grade-point average and medical career aspirations would indicate. The son of Rob and Maria Weiser of Perryopolis, Ethan has two younger sisters, Frazier sophomore Emma and eighth grader Mara. “They both look up to me, kind of,” Weiser said when asked about his sisters.

Weiser made it to nationals in the Junior Olympic javelin event and finished 15th in the WPIAL as a sophomore.

Playing basketball will add to an already busy schedule, but according to Weiser, it cuts down on boredom.

“It’s a struggle to budget time between friends, family, sports, academics and work,” he said. “But I like being busy.”

During the summer, Weiser worked for Brian Evans Contracting as a laborer and even enjoyed that. “It helped me stay in shape,” he said.

Of course, Weiser has high hopes for his Frazier football team this fall. The Commodores reached the WPIAL Class A playoffs last year, but are aiming higher this season.

“Our goals are to win the conference championship and do well in the playoffs,” Weiser said.

With Weiser leading the way, there may be no stopping Frazier this season.
