Johnstown Tomahawk's Zac Robbins and Keystone Ice Miner's LordAnthony Grissom battle for control of the puck during Saturday evening's game at the Ice Mine.

LEISENRING — Even the overtime went overtime Saturday night when Keystone’s Jacob Coleman faked a slap shot and wristed a shot over the Tomahawks’ Ryan Bednard’s glove hand in the 20th round in the shootout to lift the Ice Miners’ to a 2-1 shootout victory over Johnstown.

The victory avenged Friday’s 5-1 loss in Johnstown.

The teams traded goals in the fourth, 15th and 18th rounds of the shootout until Coleman closed it out with his winning wrist shot.

The Ice Miners thought they had the game won in the 11th round when Cameron Smith slid a shot under Bednard’s pad, but the officials ruled the puck came to a complete stop and was ruled no goal.

The first period was scoreless, but not without action. Some bad blood from Friday’s game carried over to late in the period when the Ice Miners’ Noah Batis received a fighting major and game misconduct at 19:32 when a scrum erupted in front of Keystone netminder Alex Blankenburg. Johnstown’s Joe Drabin received a roughing call at the same time.

The second period started with four skaters aside and Brady Bender used the open space to net the first goal of the game just 56 second into the period. Zac Hobbins and Luke Lynch assisted on the goal.

The Ice Miners’ Jon Hall answered 15 minutes later when his shot from the right point found its way through traffic past Bednard. Taylor Fernandez and Coleman assisted on the goal.

The scoreless third period had the Ice Miners killing off two minor penalties, including a tripping call on Austin Romzek with 3:58 remaining in the game.

Blankenburg was strong in the net, turning aside 28-of-39 shots. Bednard saved all but one of the 32 shots he faced.

NOTES: Keystone’s Dylan DeCandia and Johnstown’s Collin Montgomery received fighting majors and fighting misconducts at 6:14 of the second period. … Santa Claus took a break from his holiday responsibilities to drop the ceremonial first puck before the game. … The team will take a holiday break for Christmas, but returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 30, with home games against the teams from Alaska on Dec. 30-31 and Jan. 2-3.
