Ice Miners’ offense rolls in 5-2 victory

The Keystone Ice Miners returned from the Christmas break ready to play, netting three first-period goals Tuesday night in a 5-2 victory over visiting the Kenai River Brown Bears.

Keystone evens its record at 14-14-3 for 31 points and a tie for third place in the North Division.

The Brown Bears, located in Alaska, were unable to contain the Ice Miners’ offense in the opening 20 minutes as Keenan Sabatini opened the scoring with a power play goal at 6:05.

Reed Scahill and Jacob Coleman assisted on the goal.

Then, just over a minute later, AJ Coleman scored an even-strength goal off assists from LordAnthony Grissom and Alex Archibald.

The Ice Miners found the back of the net once more in the opening period when Brendan Jaquay scored at 18:48 from an AJ Coleman assist.

Jaquay scored at 6:17 of the second period to give him a two-point night. Jacob Coleman assisted on the goal.

Kenai River (11-19-1) scored at 16:47 of the second period, but the Ice Miners got the goal back at 4:58 of the third period when Robert Jaworski scored off a Vito Aluia assist.

Kenai River scored with 50 seconds remaining in the game.

Nick Kossoff turned aside 29 shots to preserve the victory. The Brown Bears’ Alec Derks made 27 saves.

Jaquay was also involved in a fight with the Brown Bears’ Ben Campbell midway through the second period with both players receiving fighting majors and game misconducts.

Kenai River was 0-of-6 on man-advantage situations, while Keystone scored once in four power plays.

The two teams meet again tonight at 6 p.m. at the Ice Mine.
